"Ann'e?"
I'm speaking
before I can stop myself.
"Can we, Baba?"
I ask and put on
a brilliant facade
of nervousness.
You have to play the lion's game,
in order to get what you want.
"Does she want to see us?"
Suki asks a very wise question.
"Yes, you can. And yes, she wants to."
There's a beat of silence.
"Is Aunty Aoi going to me okay with it?"
I'm careful not to call Aoi by her first name in front of him.
"She'll do as she's told."
The answer makes
My gut churn
With guilt and a strange dark feeling.
I glance at Suki
And I sense that she want to see Mum
But she also feels the same way.
Guilty.
Scared.
Confused.
I take a breath,
"I want to see her."
Suki nods timidly
Father relaxes
And I wonder if I made the right decision.
