I took a few deep breaths waiting for the door to open again. When it did, I walked into the room with my head held high. "Majesty." I bowed to the King while addressing him.
"Ah, Avian my dear it is lovely to see you." The King smiled. His over decorated crown sparkling in the afternoon light.
Straightening up I try to keep my voice as emotionless as possible, "You sent for me your Highness."
He brought his hands together to lay on his rounded belly, "Yes, I wanted to know if you have made your decision yet?"
My eyes widening in brief horror, but I was quick to mask it in his presence. "No my King. I have not. I still hardly know anything about Bao and Dax. So how can I make a decision?"
The King tapped two fingers against his lips while in thought. "To true my dear. We shall have to fix that then won't we? Avian this is a command. By the end of the day the two I have chosen for you will start to court you. Both will have a chance to court you separately. After that it will be your decision of how you want them to court you. Am I understood?" The King gave me a stern look.
"Yes your Highness." I say as expected of me. Great, now I have to be courted by the two guys. This is going to be a disaster in the making.
The King nodded satisfied with my answer. "Good you are dismissed. I will give the good news to Dax and Bao." He ended the conversation with a dismissive flick of the wrist.
After bowing I walked out of the throne room into the hallway. No longer feeling like going anywhere I headed for home, to seek the comfort of my bed.
The courtship was the thing that brought my world down around me, the engagements had felt fake until that moment of clear reality. I actually had to marry one of them eventually. As I passed Prince Nissim in the hallway, I couldn't help the devastation within my expression as I walked past him. Not even able to offer him a hint of a smile.
"Avian what is ever the matter?" He reached a hand toward me.
I backed away from his advance, "Please Prince Nissim leave it be. There is nothing that you can do for me." Quickly I turned and ran the rest of the way out of the castle, leaving Prince Nissim standing in the hallway. When I got to the cottage I threw myself onto my bed after closing the door.
The door of the cottage was thrown open not long after. "Okay Apprentice. Prepare for payback!" The mage who I had kissed earlier charged into the room with his power swirling around his hands. His attack stopping when he caught a glimpse of the state that I had fallen into. "What is wrong?" His hands no longer glowing from his power.
I sat up from my position to face him. "That is none of your concern Mage." My voice coming out harsher than intended.
The mage winced at my words. "My name is Camron not Mage. If you tell me the problem maybe I can help you." The mage moved closer to the bed.
The wind picked up around me as I gave into my anger. Was I really that helpless that people thought they could fix me in an instant? "Why so you even care?" I didn't let him get a word in as the torrent grew in strength sending items flying across the room. "You know what, ever mind. Just leave me be."
