CHAPTER 40

TOBIAS' POV:

After training, Tris and I walk to our apartment.

When we get in, I pull her into a hug.

"I miss being able to do this whenever I want." I tell her.

"Yeah. Me too." She says, nuzzling her head into my collar bone.

I'm about to kiss her when I hear,
*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*

"Ugh." I groan. Tris giggles.

"I'll get it!" She tells me.

"Ok, I'll be in the kitchen."

I hear a *click* signaling that she unlocked the door. The front door creaks as it opens.

I hear a gasp, and then a bloodcurdling scream.

My eyes grow wide, and I sprint to the door.

Tris is on the ground, crying loudly.

I look up, and see.....Marcus. How could he have the nerve to show up?!?

"Tobias, I was jut going to apologize, I sw--" He starts. I cut him off by wrapping my fingers around his throat, and squeezing. Hard.

"Tobias..." He wheezes. I feel his trachea narrowing.

"You are a coward. Such a coward, that you took your anger out on your only child, and the only one he loves. You are a monster. You hear me? A MONSTER!" I scream, throwing him to the ground.

He gasps, holding his throat.

"Tobias, please. Please, I'm sor--"

"No your not." I spit at him.

Tris is still balled up, crying. Probably having horrific flashbacks.

Marcus still can't breathe properly, and can't stand. I rush to me and Tris' bedroom, and grab the gun we keep in our closet.

I run back to where Marcus is, and see him still gasping, his lungs searching for air.

I point the gun at his head, and click the bullet into the chamber.

"I will always hate you. Don't forget it." I tell him.

*BANG* The bullet soars through the air, and plants itself inside Marcus' head. He flops to the ground, bleeding and dead.

"Tris, I'll be right back." I tell her soothingly.

I carry my fathers bleeding body to the Pit. I look around. Surprisingly, no one asks about the dead person over my shoulder. They don't even give me a second glance.

I walk to the railing, and fling his body over the chasm. He is gone for good now.

I run back to the apartment, and see Tris, still on the floor. She's no longer crying, but looks very, very frightened.

I scoop her up, and set her in my lap on the couch. She snuggles up against me.

"Is he gone?" She asks.

"Gone for good." I answer.

She sighs, "Thank goodness."

"You ok?"

"I think so. I just had a relapse I guess." She explains.

"Maybe we should get to bed. That was pretty stressful." I suggest.

"I agree, let's go." Tris stands up, and takes my hand, dragging me into our room.

Once we get dressed, and ready for bed, she says, "Thank you."

"For what?" I ask.

"Protecting me."

"Always." I answer smiling.

We climb into bed, and Tris lays her head on my shoulder.

"Love you." She says sleepily.

"I love you too." I say truthfully.

Tris had a nightmare that night. The first in about a month. It wasn't too bad, but it it was pretty scary for her, considering she hadn't encountered one in a while.

It happened at 2:15 A.M., and she couldn't sleep after that. Neither could I.

At 6:00 A.M. we get out of bed, and get ready. I watch Tris use her make up to cover her scar. I sigh.

After we are both ready, we walk to the Cafeteria. The initiates aren't here. It's only 6:30.

But, our friends are here.

"Why are you guys here so early?" I ask.

"Couldn't sleep. We heard gunshot last night, and we were worried. Didn't you hear it?" Christina asks.

"Yeah..." I say uncomfortably. They heard my gunshot.

We eat the rest of breakfast in utter silence. I finally get annoyed with it, and ask, "Whats everyone doing today?"

"Well, obviously, Uriah and I are training initiates." Zeke answers.

"Christina? Shauna?" I ask.

"We are going to look for jobs." Shauna tells me.

"Ok." I say.

We watch the initiates walk in, and Whit takes a seat next to Tris.

I. Hate. Him. He's always making googly eyes at Tris.

"Hey Six." He greets. "Four." He nods, and grimaces at me.

"So Six, what are we learning today?" Whit asks.

"Guns." She keeps her answer short, sensing that I'm uncomfortable. She probably is too.

After an awkward breakfast, we head to the training room.

"Everyone grab a gun." Tris says. Everyone stands still.

"NOW!" She yells menacingly.

They all scramble to grab a gun. I chuckle quietly.

"Same stance as when you threw the knife. Both hands on the gun. Go." I tell them.

I immediately hear a series of bangs.

"Six!" I call. She walks over.

"You help the girls. I'll help the guys." I tell her.

"You worried about something?" She asks smirking.

"Well, yeah!" I answer defensively.

"Fine. We'll talk about this at home." She agrees.

She walks over to Viviana, whose having stance problems. I help Harvey, whose struggling with focus.

After a while, Tris calls, "LUNCH! Be back in an hour!"

The initiates shuffle out of the room.

"Let's go." I say, taking her hand.

We walk to the Cafeteria.
