Chapter 30

I know, I know.  It was stupid of me to let my guard down.  I wouldn’t like to have to be scared and jumpy every single day of my life.  Can a girl shop?

Obviously that wasn’t the case here.  It was a weird feeling, being made of cloth, and I really wasn’t digging it.

Circe’s face was suddenly gigantic and back in front of my face.  I really didn’t like the enlarged immortal eye.  When she laughed, it reverberated and had be stumbling back.  Was that even possible in one dimensional things?

“You’re my little masterpiece now, demigod.”  She hissed.

I mouthed the words I tried to say.  “Why did you want me?”

She shrugged.  “Isn’t it simple?  Percy Jackson destroyed my palace.  Thousands of years of renovations, destroyed by those pirates!  My handmaidens captured.  My business was ruined and it’s all thanks to the sea brat and his blonde friend.”

Annabeth, I thought.  She sat down, obviously satisfied with herself.

“Now,”  she said cockily, “we wait.”

Turns out, we didn’t have to wait that long.  The group came out of the indoor market, their eyes searching.  I could hear them calling my name.

The witch snickered.  “Here they come!”

I prayed that Annabeth would recognize Circe right away.  But as I had that reassuring thought, the sorceress waved her hand over her face, and immediately her appearance was altered.

She was no longer a 35 year old woman with pretty features, but an old woman that could have once been beautiful, but wasn’t anymore.  The group wandered closer to the vendor, still calling my name.  They must’ve sensed something was wrong, because they had their weapons drawn.

Finally, the inevitable happened.  They reached the tent.  I was pounding on the tapestry, begging for them to look up and notice me, but no such luck.

Circe stood.  “Tapestry?  We’re having a sale.”

Leo shook his head, and with Nico, they walked off, oblivious to the fact that I was literally just above their heads.  Percy and Annabeth stayed.

Annabeth was making polite conversation with the witch.  Percy was admiring the tapestries in awe.  “These are beautiful tapestries, ma’am.”  Percy complimented.

The vendor smiled with her teeth missing with each grin.  “Why, thank you young man.  See anything you like?”

Annabeth now was examining the weavings as well.  She had a pained expression on her face, like weaving itself was bothering her.  She scanned the array of merchandise the sorceress had put on display.
