Frankie was sat on a swing rocking herself back and forth, a cigarette on her hand and a lighter on her lap. Matty had called her at 1:00 am, waking her up and somehow with small amount of sweet talk dragged her out of her bed into a park that was near her house.
"I was driving around and I thought of you" He said but that was a lie and Matty knew that, but he liked to believe it wasn't. The truth was that he wasn't just "driving around".
He wanted to see her just like a kid wants all of the cookies from the jar and somehow finds a way to get on top of the counter to eat them all, the only difference here was that he wasn't going to eat Frankie; well at least not in the literal sense.
"Well what you want me to do about it? " said Frankie groggily, she was tired and sleepy and mentally exhausted after trying to take care of her mother's unwell heart and kooky brain.
"I don't really know" he said almost content with hearing the sound of her calm and steady breathing. "We could meet, maybe" he said after what felt like forever. Frankie had almost felt back asleep but now she was fully awake and aware of what she was getting herself into.
"I'm wearing the ugliest pajamas ever and I'm not willing to change" Frankie said after looking at herself in the mess that were her untangled white sheets full of makeup stains.
"I wouldn't want you too, your ugliest pajamas look just like lingerie to me darling" said Matty after a chuckle. "You could probably wear the most hideous clothes ever and you would still look fit"
"Alright first fuck off, second there is a small park on the corner of High and Main Street we could meet there" she said getting out of bed looking for some shoes in the mess that was her room.
"Or we could just meet at your place?" He said almost with a suggestive and cheeky undertone- Frankie truly laughed at that: " My place? Matty I live with my mom I don't think she would appreciate you sneaking inside besides she's a very light sleeper"
"Yeah you're probably right, sometimes I forget you're 16" He laughed with that airy and mischievous tone of his that made Frankie's head spin around.
"Anyway I'll see you there love" he said before ending the call leaving Frankie to tie up her black converse. She stood still listening to the sounds of the house before heading out, her mother had taken a Valium before going to bed so she would probably be okay because what she didn't know was for her own good.
Frankie slowly opened the window just like she had done many night before, this wasn't the first time she had sneak out to meet some dude but this was different and maybe just maybe this in a way held some type of importance. Frankie slowly moved down the ladder that was conveniently placed next to her window, once she let her feet hit the ground she realized that she probably should have worn a jacket.
The park was just a few blocks away and she had walked these streets her whole life, she knew them just the same as if they were etched in her head with a sharp knife, scored in deep like some strange work of art.
These were the streets in which she grew up after her parents divorced and she had to move to gloomy London from hot L.A, for the most part she was calm there, at home even. Not this tonight though.
This night her heart wanted out of her heavy chest. It wanted to beat free of its cage. It pounded like it was going to crack a rib. Her senses were on high alert. Every colour was brighter, every noise that made a cat as it looked through the trash was louder but it was ok because somewhere, up high, the stars twinkled, and the moon shone. Frankie knew they were there even if they were obscured by the ethereal veil of fog that was cast across the London cityscape that night.
She found the darkness strange. Living in the heart of a city only to move to another. She had grown used to having the warm, orange glow of streetlamps outside her window, the light that they reflected filtering in through the gaps in the curtains.
For some reason tonight felt darker, this was a blackness that's she couldn't recall seeing before - one that was almost absolute; it was probably because the power was down on a few block but she liked being cryptic and ominous.
When she tilted her head skyward she could see clearly about a dicen of bright stars dotted on the black canvas of night, yet none of that light seemed to filter far enough down to make any difference when she turned her eyes away to the well lighted park because there, in the stupid government build common area it looked brighter, or at least it seem that way and that was good enough for her because she knew it wasn't the place that was brighter for it was the promise it kept of seen Matty there that was glowing, way more than any stars.
That's how she ended up here, swinging- eyes closed, just swinging. It had being half an hour and Matty was still nowhere to be found, she was looking into the sky smoking a cigarette trying to keep her dignity and not leave 105 voicemails because that would be totally wacky.
"It's kind of all going to shit isn't it?"
"You scared the leaving crap out of me you asshole!" Exclaimed Frankie almost falling from her swing and dropping her cigarette in the process. "I'm sorry I didn't mean too" "I know" she said with a sigh.
"You were right when you said your pajamas were ugly" he said hands in his pocket, standing in front of her analyzing her in every way posible.
"I told you they were, I wasn't lying" she said looking down at her unicorn fuzzy pants and One Direction shirt. "I thought you were too cool to listen to their music""Oh fuck off! nothing is as cool as One Direction when you are 12"
They stayed quiet for a bit: Matty mostly looking at her shirt and Frankie trying not to freeze eventually Matty did realize that she was shivering.
"Take it" He said taking of his leather Hermès jacket and in any other situation Frankie would probably refuse but that night cold licked at her face and crept under her clothes, spreading across her skin like the lacy tide on a frigid winter beach so basically she was shit cold.
"Thanks Matty"
