34. You will never learn

THE MOONLIGHT CARESSES my snowy white fur, as I lie on the ground, snout up, facing the starry sky. Then a giant cloud blows over and shrouds the territory in pitch darkness.

It's a Friday night, and I'm using my rare moments alone to breathe in the beauty of solitude, before I'm pulled back into a world of paperwork and loud noises.

It's been a long hard week.

The next one is going to be harder still.

For the last ten days, I've put up with all the crap papa's pretty princess brought home when she moved in with us. One minute, my bed is in the centre of the room and my wardrobe filled with ten pairs of jeans; then the next minute, I'm pushed into a corner and there are Tyler Posey and Ryan Gosling's bare chests plastered to my walls.

What a great view to wake up to, right?

I close my eyes and exhale. I'm tired. So fucking tired, I'm not moving from this spot even if Satan himself commands me otherwise.

My life is slowly falling back into the old routine and I don't know if I love it or hate it.

Mornings, I wake up before anyone else and slip out of the house for a long run. Earphones in my ears and music on full blast, I do seven laps as human and fourteen as wolf. Sweatshirt drenched, I'm warm as a toast when I get back.

Post lunch, I'm with Ashton, poring over paperwork. Now that Claire and her conspiracies are six feet under the ground, chewed on by earthworms, her place in the office has been taken over Ariana.

And Ariana is well... Ariana. With her, life is interesting to say the least.

Since she absolutely refuses to be Luna, I had to come up with a step by step plan to prepare her. In the afternoons, I train her into using her strength and stamina to the best of her abilities. Luckily, she's a quick learner and that makes my job marginally easier.

Evenings are usually spent on the grounds, training the packs. As it turns out, stealing the Opticus helped a lot. The Guardians had them made by the hundreds, when Ariana informed them how GreyHound used it to train his men.

Except for the gaping hole Aden left behind when he left us, everything else is falling back in place.

My eyes blink restlessly as I feel a sense of foreboding seep into me. Call it just a gut feeling or a Luna's intuition, but there's something out there that just won't let me sleep in peace.

Something bad is going to happen. Tonight.

Minutes tick by in silence but nothing happens.

I scramble onto my feet and shift back into human form. Throwing on a pair of denim shorts and a tank top, I head back to the house to check up on Stella.

There's a rush of movement, a faint rustle of the breeze. Before I know it someone pounces on me out of the darkness.

I'm knocked off my feet. For a suspended second I'm soaring through the air before my back hits the back of a tree stump with a resounding thud. Ouch.

Instinct kicks in a split second later. I jump back on my feet; senses in high alert. When I spot him charging towards me, I curl my hands into fists. Breathe in. Land a punch straight in his gut.

A sharp exhale of breath. Then, he topples over.

You want war, you got war. Twisting my neck side to side and flexing my arms, I ready myself for a fight.

Until a familiar scent wafts up my nose and I freeze mid step.

Baby oil? Wait. I sniff the air.
