THE ROOM IS cold. Dark gray walls close in on me, making me claustrophobic. All of a sudden, the air knocked out of me. Clutching my head between my hands, I wait for the nausea to pass.

It doesn't.

I feel sick.

Worse. I feel empty. Numb.

My eyes begin to flutter shut and I fall against my bed as the darkness swirls around me like a whirlwind. I can't breathe. I'm becoming light headed. Crap. I'm dying and I know it.

Someone coughs. "You're not dying."

The all-too-familiar, frigid voice of my nemesis makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, all senses heightening at once. Grayson tenses, readying himself for a fight if the need arises.

I open my eyes and there he is; his long black cloak billowing behind him as he lounges in my bedroom. Leaning against the door frame, he pretends to examine his nails.

"Grey." I say his name like poison on my lips. My throat is parched like the desert. "How did you get in?"

He lifts his eyes from his nails and gives me once-over, a slow smirk creeping up his face. His electric blue eyes seem to dance with amusement as he watches me squirm awkwardly.

"I'm not here." He drawls. "You're dreaming of me."

Disbelief marrs my face as I scoff in contempt. "Sure. And here I was thinking you didn't have a sense of humor."

His lip curls up further, almost into a sneer. "Allow me to rephrase. You're hallucinating."

I frown in confusion, until realisation dawns on me. It's bad enough that the poison will kill me in a few days, now he wants to annoy me even in the last days of my life too?

Sadistic little bitch.

"I added a few drops of my blood to the poison before it was injected in you. When my blood is injected in a person, there are only two outcomes to it. Either you die, or you are linked to me forever. Death simply means you weren't evolved enough to be my follower in the first place." He explains. "You're a lucky boy, Carter. You are still alive. You're one the chaps Darwin was talking about."

I didn't understand his games. One second he wants me dead, the next second he wants us to be linked for an eternity. If I didn't know any  better, I'd say he had a crush on me.
