I was breathing fast

I was breathing fast. My heart wrecked violently in my chest. I was in a dream. The same dream as last time. I recognized the broad highway, bordered at the side by a familiar forest that stretched remotely. The crescent moon sparkled in the starless night sky. I was replaying my first nightmare.

But why am I back here?

A cold breeze slithered over my exposed skin, releasing goosebumps that indicated my cocktail attire. I was still in the dress. I rubbed my arms, trying to bring in warmth. Everything felt so real.

A low snarl reached my auditory, making me tense. I slowly twisted around. My heart caught in my throat when I saw what lay on the tarmac road.

Oh no. Please no.

About fifty feet away, the dark monstrous silhouette moved. I stumbled back as two jagged bat wings spread out, unfolding as they reached for the night sky.

They were huge.

Attached to it was the demon, its head bowed as it knelt on its hands and knees. But this time it was different. It looked different; more humane.

I scrutinized its lean but muscular build and observed the dark hair that hid a face. Its human skin looked dried, chipped, and covered with dirt like it had traveled in scorching deserts for days. I sucked in a breath when it slowly lifted its head. Two red rubies stared right at me, but I recognized the face.
