Alex's P.O.V.

I stepped into the elevator to go to my office, finding a boy sitting in the corner sobbing.

"Tough day?", I asked as the doors closed. He jumped, wiping his tears and jumping up,

"Y-Yes sir. I'm sorry sir."

"Where are you supposed to be?"

"D-Detention.", he whispered. I nodded,

"With who?" He glanced at the slip of paper in his hand,

"Um M-Mr. Jensen." I nodded again,

"Okay. I'll call him. Come with me.", I said as the elevator opened.

"Sir-"

"You're not in trouble." He hesitantly followed me into my office, sitting across from my desk. "What's your name?"

"Zander." I nodded,

"So, what's going on that you were crying in the elevator?"

"I-I just had a bad day. I know you're busy, you don't have time for my drama.", he said softly.

"I make time for things that matter. Why was it a bad day?" He looked up at me, hesitating,

"I-I've just been really stressed this week and a couple of guys were messing with me. I got mad and yelled and that's why I'm here." I nodded,

"Who?"

"What?"

"Who was messing with you?"

"James Madison and Henry Chansen."

"Okay. I'll handle it. Why are you so stressed out?"

"I-I have to leave here."

"Why?"

"My-My parents found out I'm-I'm gay. They disowned me and cut me off, meaning I can't pay tuition. I can't even afford food.", he forced a laugh. I paused,

"You're not leaving."

"What?"

"You heard me. You're top of the junior class and honestly, I don't like the girl right below you and I want you to stay there. I never do this, but you remind me of Jake.", I said, gesturing to the picture of me and him the day he graduated, "I'd never let such an achiever be forced out of here. Especially when you like it and you do good here."

"I-I really appreciate that sir but I-I can't afford food or clothes or anything to stay here."

"Scholarships come with two hundred dollars every week. And you can easily find a job after school, I'll help you if you'd like."

"Really?" I nodded. "You never seemed... kind... in past years. I've always been terrified of you." I nodded,

"Most students were. I had some things in my life change and they helped me realize being feared didn't help anyone. Most of the kids here still respect me just the same after I've shown them kindness and compassion. I was never good at showing it, but I've always cared a great deal about my students and I'm kinda trying to make up for it."

"I think you are. Thank you."

"Of course. Come to me if you need anything Zander."

"Thank you sir."

"Remia!", I barked, walking into the apartment. I was met with silence as I sighed, making my way upstairs to her room. She laid in bed with headphones in, her eyes closed and her hands holding her head tightly. "Remia.", I said loudly. She still didn't hear me as I walked over and paused her classical music. Weird. "Mia." Her eyes opened as she ripped out the headphones and sat up quickly,

"I can explain!"

"You'd better fucking hope so young lady.", I said sternly, "Mia, people know you're my responsibility now. You of all people cannot just ditch school!"

"I-I know. I'm really sorry I just-", she stopped, looking away as tears lined her eyes, "It-It's really bad today. I couldn't sit through class like this." I sat next to her, tucking her brown hair her ear,

"Love why didn't you just tell me that? I would have let you stay and I would have stayed with you."

"I-I didn't think you would. I sound like a psycho.", she laughed.

"Don't say that about yourself. You're not psycho. You're doing really good, sometimes you just have bad days. But you have to say so when you do or you just end up in trouble, like now." She nodded a little bit,

"I'm sorry."

"I know. Let's get this over with so you can chill out the rest of the day. She nodded, laying over my lap as I picked up a wooden ruler from her desk,

SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK! SMACK!

"You can't just ditch school and not tell anyone. I was worried something happened to you."

"I-I know. I'm sorry.", she sniffled as I helped her up.

"I forgive you baby."

"Sir, we have a situation with a student that's out of my hands.", Ms. Jennings said over the phone.

"Alright. I'm on my way." I could hear sobbing and incoherent talking before I walked into the math class, but I didn't expect to see Mia curled up in a ball on the floor, her hands buried in her hair as she banged her head on the wall. Ashlyn sat a few feet from her, holding her head while looking hurt. "Are you okay?", I asked Ashlyn as I moved to Mia. She nodded,

"I-I'm fine. I just tried to talk to her." I nodded,

"I know. We'll talk later." I sat in front of Mia, grabbing her hands, "Hey, calm down. Breathe." She froze at my voice before latching onto me tightly. "Shh, it's okay. Come on." I helped her up and out of the room, texting Michael to come over as fast as he could.

"They won't stop.", Mia whispered as we walked towards the apartment. I nodded,

"I texted Michael. I'm staying with you too. You'll be okay."

~~~~
"Alex, it takes time. She has and will have bad days.", Michael said softly, "Yes, this was one of her worst. But she's okay. No one got hurt."
"I just want her to get better."
"I know. I do too. But I've got her on medication that works and she really does talk to me. I know this seems like a setback, but she's doing a lot better." He handed me a small white bag, "If she ever starts to seriously freak and try to hurt someone or herself, try to give her one of the sleeping pills and bring her to a doctor. If you can't get her to take the pill, give her a shot. But only if you need to, it's not good for her." I nodded,
"Okay. Thank you."
"Listen, there's no point in you staying here. Go teach your class, explain to them that she's okay. I'll stay with her until you get back but she should sleep for a few hours."
"You're sure?"
"A hundred percent."
"Okay. Thanks."
