Alex's P.O.V.

"Hey. Can I ask a really big favor?", Allison asked over the phone.

"Of course. What's up kid?"

"The bank found out mama died and they're taking the ranch. I have to be out in two days and I could really use some help with everything."

"We'll see you first thing in the morning."

Our plane landed at almost four in the morning. I carried Mia's sleeping body into the guest room, then round Allison in the kitchen.

"Hey kiddo.", I said hugging her.

"Hi."

"You should be asleep."

"Haven't slept since they called me."

"I'm sorry they're taking the house."

"Me too. This has always been my home. But... I guess it's good. It's time for me to move on. I shouldn't be this far out from a town of I'm living alone anyways."

"How do you feel about the city?"

"I live it. Everything's fast and bright and new. The animals and mama kept me here."

"So... maybe I add a ticket to our flight friday?"

"Like... go back with you?"

"Yeah. And stay with us. You can go to the school and you and Mia already get along great. You'll make new friends really quick and-and I'll take care of you. I never got to." She hesitated,

"You're sure you wanna take on another kid?" I nodded,

"Absolutely. Especially my own."

Around six, a man in a cops uniform came into the kitchen from the hall,

"Goodmorning Liza-Beth." She rolled her eyes at the name,

"Goodmorning Jensen." He winced,

"Brutal babydoll. Brutal." She laughed a little as he looked to me, "Hey. I'm Mike." I shook his hand,

"Alex. And you're..."

"He's like my brother.", Allison said, "Obnoxious, overprotective, around too much, older brother."

"Wow. Well don't worry, I'm off to work.", Mike said going to leave. Allison jumped up from the table, hugging him from behind,

"Be careful I love you.", she said quickly. He turned around and hugged her,

"I will. I love you too. Don't get kicked by a horse."

"Don't get shot by a civilian." He waved to me before leaving. "Mike has always been close with our family. He stays here when he's too tired to drive an hour home."

"I like him."

"Me too." She sighed, "Well, trailer comes at seven for the horses."

"Let's get started."

Mia walked into the living room from hanging out with friends as I set my phone down,

"Hey kid. You didn't wanna go mini golfing?" She looked up at me, confused but still smiling,

"What?" I paused,

"The others went mini golfing. Ashlyn posted it on Instagram." Her smile fell,

"Oh. I-I uh-" She stopped, sitting next to me.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know."

"It's whatever.", she shrugged.
