42 | "You better take responsibility for this."

"You better take responsibility for this."

Laura's POV

"Let's meet up at the library today, you know, to continue on the assignment.", I stated, "I mean, if you've got time.", as we were walking to our next class.

"We've got practice today but I'll be free afterwards.", he said while glancing at me. "It won't take long, though."

"It's okay."  I smiled at him, "I'll just wait in the library in the meantime."

He gave me a soft smile, "Alright."

After our last class that day, I decided to watch the boys practice for a little bit. I sat on one of the benches and leaned back as I watched them from afar.

Without even thinking, my eyes found the blond guy they were searching for.

I sighed while watching him running.

It must be hard being the team's captain. He has to take responsibility for a lot of things.

I saw some team member having difficulties with following and saw Ross being called upon my the coach.

He was looking down the whole time with his hands clasped in front of him. Even though I didn't hear their conversation, I could tell that he was giving Ross an earful.

I do get that he's the team captain and all, but does coach have to be so harsh on him ?

I realized that time flew when the boys headed back into the building. Ross didn't even notice me watching them for such a long time, I guess he had something on his mind. Obviously.

I gathered my things and went to the library, searching for a free table. As soon as I found one, I sat down and turned a laptop on. I looked through my notes absentmindedly and only realised that someone had sat down next to me when my pen dropped.

"You're here.", I said while turning to Ross with  a smile. He on the other side seemed a bit down and forced a small smile on his lips.

"Yeah.. So what have you done in the meanwhile ? What should I do ?"

What have I done.. well, I watched you but that would sound really creepy so let me come up with an excuse real quick.

"Uh, not much actually.", wow real smooth, Laura. Real smooth.

"Let's get started than, I guess.", he said while taking out his stuff. He had just showered I guess, judging from his wet hair. And yes, he did smell good.

"I'll go looking around for a few books which will maybe help us.", I suggested before standing up and looking around the shelves.

He's obviously not in the mood for this assignment which I totally understand. But am I even in a position to talk with him about it ?

Maybe he'd be embarrassed that I saw it or something. Ugh, I really don't know, boys are so complicated.

I found two books on the shelves which were about our topic and spotted a third one on one of the upper shelves.

What an advantage my height is enables me in times like this.

I looked around for a ladder but there were none and I sighed before tiptoeing and trying to reach the book. I jumped a little and just as I thought I was about to reach it, another hand reached from above me to get it.

I instantly turned around to see Ross. He had one arm reached over my head because of the book I was trying to get and looked down on me too meet my gaze.

He didn't smile or anything but something about him made him look so innocent in that very moment.

I don't know if it was his still-wet messy hair which fell above his eyes or the fact that he just tried to seem all okay while being with me even though he wasn't.

We stood there for a second before I gathered all the courage I had and stepped a step forward.

He looked startled at the sudden closeness but didn't move away either.

I put my arms around him and leaned my head onto his chest.

"I appreciate you trying to act like everything's okay, but please don't.", I said without looking at him, "How else should people know when to comfort you ?"

His body tensed under my touch.
He didn't move but I could hear his heartbeat picking up, pounding loudly. It felt like we stood there for eternity before he gave a response. He took a deep breath.

"You better take responsibility for this.", I heard him mutter under his breath before I felt his arms wrap around me.
