"Isn't that basic human decency?"

Laura's POV

After everyone went to the field again to continue the game, Maia and Emma turned towards me, "Are you gonna stay here ?"

I looked at Ross who was leaning his head back with the cool pad behind his head and his eyes closed, "Yeah, it was too loud for me anyways. My head kinda started to hurt so I'll stay here for a while."

Emma and Maia exchanged knowing looks before nodding, "Alright, see you later than.", Maia said before they started to walk away towards to where our seats were.

I looked at Ross and than sighed before sitting down next to him. I glanced at him once again but he still had his eyes closed.

This is awkward.

I'm not used to him being so quiet.

All of this reminded me of the conversation I had with Emma and Maia at the camp.

How he was probably also dealing with more than he seemed to. I started to fiddle with the hem of my shirt.

Why did I even get myself into this awkward situation? I should've went with Maia and Emma, gosh.

I guess it's just the empathy I felt towards Ross. He seemed like he had a lot on his mind and I... But really, what the hell am I even doing here ?

"You should have gone with them.", I heard Ross say, making my head snap into his direction.

"Why ?", I questioned out loud. Doesn't he want me to be here ?

"Feels pretty awkward right now, doesn't it ?"

"I mean...", I started, not knowing what exactly to answer. The question was obviously rhetoric.

He shrugged, regretting it instantly when he flinched because of the pain, "This doesn't suit us."

"What doesn't suit us ?", I asked him.

Also, since when was there an 'us' ?

"Being in serious situations like this. Since we got to know each other, it was mainly me messing around with you and you getting annoyed by it.", he stated before adjusting the cool pad.

"I mean, yeah but you seemed like you needed comfort a-", I started but was cut off by him.

"See ? This is exactly what I'm talking about. Why would you care when I am having a bad time ? Let alone, comfort me ?", he questioned.

Right now, everything he said was only making me more confused than I already was.

"Isn't that basic human decency?", I countered.

"You didn't really seem to care about basic human decency a few months ago.", he said.

I crossed my arms in front of my chest frustrated. What's his deal ?

"I've always cared about it. You just didn't seem like you needed any kind of help back than." I felt myself getting worked up over it.

He still wasn't facing me and just opened his eyes and looked at the ceiling because of the position his head was in.

"I didn't seem like I needed help back than ?", he repeated with a questioning undertone.

"Yes. You were literally walking around the school without a care in the world.", I told him.

"That's what it seemed like to you ?"

"Yes."

"Without a care in the world.", he repeated my words, "wow.", he added while running his hand through his hair.

What is he getting so frustrated at ??

"You helped me a few times so I was only trying to return the favor.", I told him, still only seeing his side profile while looking at him.

"Are you being to everyone like this ? Helping everyone who is in need of it ?"

"Ross, are you being serious right now ?", I furrowed my brows confused. "I literally was only trying to help you, why are you getting so frustrated about it ? Why are you acting like an ass right now ?", I asked him.

"Isn't that what my reputation is about anyways ? Being a disappointment to everyone who ever saw something different in me ?", he stated while turning his head towards me and looking me straight in the eyes.

I couldn't quite name what it was in that moment, but it seemed like there was more to his words than he was admitting to. But seeing him in this mood means that this discussion will not end in any time soon.

He indeed seemed frustrated but he seemed like he had a whole different reason. Was it about Zion ?

Is he being like this because he can't be on the field right now ?

And his reputation? He was speaking as if everything was a lie... Or is he getting frustrated at himself ?

No matter what his reason was, he shouldn't be taking it out on me right now. I know it's because I'm the only person here right now, but I only stayed to be some sort or comfort.

Not to be having a discussion with him. Especially at this moment where I knew that two of my best friends were on the field, giving their best to win.

I stood up, making him look at me surprised, "I think I should go... I really don't get what your deal is, Ross. Let's talk again when you've calmed down.", I told him before walking the same way Maia and Emma went.

Third Person POV

Ross looked after her and when she disappeared down the hallway, he grabbed the cool pad from the back of his head frustrates and threw it onto the ground before running his hand through his hair once again.

He than covered his face with both of his hand and muttered, "My deal is, that if you continue acting like this, I will genuinely get interested in you.", before sighing and than adding, "And that's obviously not in your favor."
