Masked Or Not?

Putting on masks drains us of our certainty and life.
There are times to wear masks, but not all the time.
Masks can entertain, aid a job, or help one survive,
But those masks are still just as taxing on the soul.
Ask anyone who wears one if they are still them.

If you asked me if I am still myself, I'd say 'Barely.'
It's true because I nearly lost myself in my masks.
Never once have a wore a mask for a decent reason,
And yet I still feel less like myself than I once did.
Masks were once how I had lived, but no longer!

I only bring out the dusty masks when all else fails,
Because I still want to be myself and grow some more.
To some the idea of draining masks may seem crazy,
But to them I ask, Are actors truly happy or is it a mask?
How many of us have or can live a life without a mask?

If I may be the first to live this way, let it be so.
I will live without a mask for as long as I can,
And the masks will stay in the dark corner alone.
They may be tempting at times, but I won't heed.
I wish to live a life without masks to see the difference.

Perhaps, dear friend, you will join me in this quest?
