(I don't know if this part was filler or not but I'm including it anyway since it adds to Master Shen's character. I'll also be including some other filler parts later on like Y/N going with Goku to meet Master Mutaito using the Time Room.)
Y/N POV
After Chiaotzu's humiliating defeat at the hands of Krillin, the Tournament came to a close for the day and as such, Master Shen along with the rest of us returned to the Hotel which we were staying at.
I wasn't angry at Chiaotzu for failing, Krillin used an underhanded trick. Master Shen on the other hand was furious by the event! Though I also believe that may have something to do with him finding out Goku killed his brother.
Anyway, we all sat down in our room, the sun was setting outside and Master Shen was trying to get Chiaotzu better at his mathematics skills so that it wouldn't be his downfall in the future like it was here.
First Master Shen asked "Quickly now! 2 + 1?" Chiaotzu took a while to think about it before looking up and exclaiming "3! 3." Next Master Shen asked "9 - 6?" This time Chiaotzu put up his fingers and began counting. That was a mistake.
I could tell Shen was glaring through his sunglasses as he slowly stood up as Chiaotzu replied. "3, yes 3?" Master Shen then yelled "No fingers!" He proceeded to his Chiaotzu over the head with a rolled up book. Shen berated Chiaotzu saying "Count with your head, not with your hands!"
Me and Tien just watched uneasily. Neither of us liked seeing Chiaotzu hurt or being yelled at but he needed to learn how to count without his fingers.
Timeskip...
It was night time now and almost everyone on Papaya Island were fast asleep at this point. We were no exception. Master Shen's bed was closest to the door, next was Chiaotzu who was sleeping with his teddy, then there was mine and Tien's beds after that.
I was suddenly awoken to the sound of movement in our room. I slowly opened my eyes and saw Master Shen sat upright, still in his pyjamas. He put his sunglasses on before slowly sneaking out of the room.
A voice then asked "Y/N?" I turned around to see Tien also awake. I knew he was just as confused as me so I asked "Should we follow him?" Tien replied "Yes, I think I know where he may have gone."
That's when I realized myself, he'd likely gone off to assassinate Goku after what had happened with Tao! Though both me and Tien knew this wouldn't be satisfying enough and justice wouldn't be served the same.
We both put our green robes on again before also sneaking out of the room, leaving Chiaotzu to rest some more. After all, he'd had a busy day.
Making out way out into the night, it didn't take us long to track down Master Shen and sure enough we found him staring down Goku and arguing. Eventually though, the two lunged at one another, this was our chance!
Before they made contact, Tien leapt into the air and used his arm to block Goku while his left leg blocked Shen.

All three of them landed back on the ground as I stepped out of the shadows. Master Shen angrily exclaimed "Tien Shinhan!" He stepped forward saying "Tien. I don't remember inviting you or Y/N."
Tien answered "My apologies master but I didn't want you to kill Goku." Master Shen simply said "Explain." I could tell he as still angry.
I spoke up next saying "With all due respect sir. This shouldn't happen here." There was a pause before I continued "No one wants vengeance for this crime more than us, but there's no satisfaction in killing Goku here. A quick death is too good for him. He deserves to suffer as we do now."
Master Shen asked "What did you both have in mind?" Tien explained "Tao was slain by Goku's hand. But Master Roshi's guided it. He should watch his pupil die in the ring. Broken and publicly humiliated."
This caused Shen to briefly looked at me before turning back to Tien and saying "Both your hearts are cold and ruthless, they warm my own. Proceed." We bowed and said in unison "We are honoured Master."
Then we turned to glare at Goku as Tien said "And you, the next time we fight, it will be for Tao's honour." Goku defiantly said "I'll fight, but it's not about Tao, this one's for Yamcha." I seethed at him and said "Self-righteous to the end. I'll enjoy breaking you."
Tien said "Whatever gets you there. Just don't lose any matches behind now and then. You'll have to fight either me or Y/N and I promise the pain will be the same either way." I nodded at his statement. Goku confidently replied "I'll do my best."
And on that night, a rivalry was born, one that would eventually go far beyond mortal comprehension...
