♧♧♧
Soo-Young's POV
I was in my room, thinking some profound thoughts about what Hye-Rin had said the previous day. She wasn't as confident as she had been, and her energy seemed wrong. Furthermore, Mr Lee was present at the trial and quickly followed Hye-Rin when the press asked us questions. I even observed her pupils contracting whenever she looked at Mr Lee. Is Hye-Rin acting as a pawn in this case? Is Mr Lee the main perpetrator, and he's exploiting her for his own benefit?!?...
"You appeared deeply disturbed, Soo-Young ah." The chief approached me as he entered the room after noticing me daydreaming while playing with my ballpen, and I had no idea he came in
"Hello chief, and yeah, I'm thinking about something." I snapped out of it and promptly bowed at him, nervously mumbling.
"I thought the trial went well." He murmured and had most likely read some articles or watched the news.
"The trial went well, but I believe I'm prosecuting the wrong target." I said this after careful consideration, but I'm not sure whether my prediction is right or not.
"What gives you that impression?" He questioned as he quickly sat down, his hands interlaced.
"Chief, I saw Mr Lee at the trial and when Hye-Rin saw Mr Lee, she appeared terrified and sweating as well. Why would he be there anyway? It's between Hye-Rin and I." I answered while tapping my fingers, which is a habit of mine when I find anything fishy.
"So, what is your conclusion?" My chief knew I had the solution and was waiting for me to reveal it.
"I'm not sure whether it's true, but I believe Mr Lee is playing Hye-Rin. I'm sure he was behind it all, and he's the one who created this misunderstanding amongst us all." I glanced at him and decided, despite the fact that it is only a dumb hypothesis of mine,
"Are you ready to embark on his case?" He laughed at me as he handed me a brown file containing information regarding Mr Lee's case, which had been assigned to him in 1996.
"But I only recently discovered this, and the ultimate trial is in 35 days. How am I supposed to gather evidence against him when he is so powerful? My friend even given up looking for information about him." I acknowledged as I drifted off that it was difficult for me since it was about Mr Lee.
"Why did you decide to become a detective, Soo-Young ah?" He asked me with a pleasant smile and a tiny bend of his head.
"To bring down Hye-Rin since she locked me up for no reason at all." I just answered the truth and I told him that when he interviewed me back then.
"Aside from that? When I recruited you as a detective, you told me why you wanted the position." He recalled me, and I realised that I had other motives for being a detective.
"Rich individuals who have committed a lot of crime use money to bail themselves out. I want to make sure they never get out, and I want to uncover as much proof as possible to keep them in prison. I want to demonstrate to them that money and power cannot cure all problems." I uttered the same exact things to him as I had stated during the interview.
"So, get some proof about him. Don't give up, just as you did for Hye-Rin, and I know you can accomplish it. Don't make the wrong person suffer in prison for no cause." He quickly rose from his seat, smiling warmly at me.
"How do you know my theory is correct?" I inquired, intrigued, since he immediately believed me.
"Because I've known them for a long time, and you'll soon discover the truth." He stated this while smirking, and I had no idea what he was trying to express.
