chapter eleven
{ unedited }
"HERE YOU GO, SIR," Alice said, handing the man his coffee. Maria was sitting beside her, letting her take the lead with the orders. Johnny was supposed to meet Alice here but he had been called back for a last minute shoot so she was on her own and she had been struggling. Maria had noticed and Alice asked if she could carry on training but, when being told she was fully trained and knew how to make all the drinks on the menu, Alice was now on the till taking and giving out orders.
It did take her a while to get used to the change but all the customers were kind about it. Maria had told Alice she knew all the customers already since she hardly ever got new customers so they wouldn't mind having to wait a little longer for their orders. Alice liked it though because she had a chance to distract her mind without anyone becoming agitated with her which would probably make her crack.
"Do you want to talk about what's bothering you, love?" Maria asked when Alice sighed heavily when the man left, sinking onto the stool behind her. Alice turned to her, confusion clear on her face. "You went from not coming here in a while to coming every day for the past three weeks. You look exhausted and don't think I haven't noticed you getting skinnier. What's going on?"
Alice turned to face the woman, her shoulders slumping. "I'm struggling with staying sober. I've been drinking alcoholic drinks for as long as I can remember and now I'm trying to stop so I don't get more addicted than I already am and it's so fucking hard. Being awake feels like too much effort and being drunk helps that but I can't drink and it's too hard. I really like my friend too and being around her sober is so hard and after I do talk to her I'm always tempted to drink and I don't know what to do and how long I'll be able to fight the urge."
