ALICE DROPPED ONTO HER BED, PHONE PRESSED AGAINST HER EAR. "Hey," Alice said when the call connected, a smile playing on her lips. "Why didn't you come over? I miss you." Alice was so used to Ruby coming over after school every day that it was weird when she wasn't around. Alice knew it wasn't good that she had made it a habit to be dependent on Ruby being with her but it wasn't something she could control.
"I had to stay home to help my dad," Ruby explained with a faint laugh. Alice could picture her smile when she closed her eyes, making her own grow. "You're very needy, Milburn."
"Are you complaining?"
"Not at all, it's nice. Don't get too clingy though or I'll have to drop you."
"You wouldn't do that, you like having me in your life." At least, Alice hoped that was true. She knew Ruby dropped boys when they got too clingy to her and that she was different, that Ruby wanted to keep her in her life even if she did get clingier.
Alice didn't know what'd she do if Ruby didn't.
"You're right," Ruby hummed. "You make my life interesting." Alice wasn't aware her smile could get larger until her cheeks started to hurt but she didn't drop her smile. "For later when―"
