IT WAS THE FIRST DAY OF THE LAST YEAR AT MOORDALE SECONDARY FOR ALICE AND SHE COULDN'T BE MORE ANNOYED. Her friends were all either off at university or in their own career path, no longer at the school with her. She and Aimee hadn't talked since the last term of the first year of sixth form, same with Maeve. This meant that she would be all alone there and she wasn't looking forward to it. Sure, she had gotten closer to Carmen over the summer holidays who spent a lot of their time in Eddie's caravan where Alice went when not wanting to be alone but at school they were strictly teacher and student; Alice couldn't talk to them like she would a friend.

Over the summer, Alice had a routine. It wasn't one she had planned but it was one that she seemed to repeat almost every day. As soon as she woke up she would have a shower and help out in Maria's bakery, her bottle she kept with her at all times filled with either beer or vodka mixed with juice. After an hour or two she'd head to Eddie's caravan to drop off some paintings, new or old, and spend some time there with Carmen was also there. Eddie didn't let her stay for long since he was worried she would relapse by breaking into his stash, not knowing she already had done so months ago thanks to Kyle. If not spending time at Eddie's, she'd be with her friends and mostly crashing in on their dates. By then her bottle would be finished and she'd buy some drinks of Brown's on her way home to fill it up again. If Ruby called, Alice would meet her wherever but, if not, Alice would spend the rest of her day at her apartment passing time with whatever she could whether it be a book, a movie, a drawing or painting, an instrument or even alcohol with a joint always present in her hand. When feeling herself doze off, Alice would sleep and the cycle repeats the next day.
