chapter thirty nine
{ unedited }
ALICE LOOKED INTO THE MIRROR, SCOWLING AT THE SIGHT OF THE UNIFORM. Alice had missed the rest of the week at school after Eddie visited and wasn't aware of the change in uniform until Ruby dropped hers off for her. She found it disgusting and bland and did not understand why they needed a uniform in the first place, especially one so...grey.
The bruise around her neck was starting to fade but Ruby had seen it when it was at its worst. Alice was thankful she didn't ask any questions about it, only came back the next day with some makeup and sent Alice links of tutorials on how to cover up hickies; she said it would work with this too.
Alice had done an alright job on it, in her opinion. She thanked Ruby for it many times over text and was planning on doing so when the girl picked her up to take her to school today. Ruby had insisted on doing so to make sure Alice wasn't ditching again.
Alice grabbed her headphone and put them around her neck before making her way to the shop, grabbing her bag on the way out. Her phone was already in it and she had some money in there for her lunch since she didn't have time to make herself something for lunch.
"Alice, Alice!" Maria called Alice back as she tried to reach the door, the Milburn turning to face the older woman. "Would you like something to eat?" Maria was smiling so warmly at her, her voice gentle and kind and Alice thought that she didn't deserve that. She didn't deserve Maria's kindness.
