5:30AM
MONDAY
I heard my alarm ring from my bedside table. I turned it off and crawled out of my bed.

Today's supposed to be my first day of school and I'm really nervous.

Will my new classmates like me?

Are there bullies there?

Will I be a bullying target?

I've not been in Nigeria for almost a decade now so I'm not sure what to expect. But that doesn't mean I don't read stories on the internet about bullies in boarding schools. I know bullying is everywhere. I'm not going to a boarding school but I can't help but be anxious.

I took off my night wear and put on a loose shirt and shorts. I tied a bandana around my head and slipped into my flip-flops.

I went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for everyone.

Well our maid comes to the house only twice a week to clean the house so cooking is basically on mom and I. Mom said she wants me to learn to be a 'woman'.

From the food timetable, today's breakfast is supposed to be sandwich and orange juice.

Half way through mom walked into the kitchen.

"Good morning, mom"

"Good morning, baby" she kissed my cheek, "Did you sleep well?" she asked.

"Yes" I hummed and went on with my business.

"Go ahead and prepare for school, I'll take it from here"

"Ok. Thanks" I happily accepted without hesitation.

"Help me check with your sister, will you?"

"Sure"

Twenty minutes later
I was standing in front of my full length mirror. That's a lie. I can't take less than an hour to get ready.

I was wearing a white long sleeve button down shirt and grey box pleated skirt that stopped a little above my knees.

The collar of the shirt was grey, as well as the end of it's sleeves.
My uniform was complemented with a pair of white socks that stopped somewhere around my shin and a pair of black Nike sneakers that had white soles.
I loved how I looked in the uniform.

I contemplated tucking in my shirt into my skirt or not, in the end I chose the latter. I picked the grey tie on my bed which was part of the uniform and knotted it.

My hairdo was twists and locks, the locks framed my face. Since I didn't want my hair all over my face I put a headband around my head.

"Rhys come down for breakfast!" mom called from downstairs.

"Coming!"

I wore my favorite stud earrings then lip balm and I was done.
I grabbed my white Chanel backpack from my bed and slipped my phone inside before heading downstairs.

I felt a little more confident than the way I felt when I woke up this morning.

I hurried down the stairs.

"No. I asked you to forward the email to Mr. Okoh" Shawn said to someone over the phone.

"Mhmm" he nodded his head, "Whatever it is, I'll be there as soon as I can" he glanced at his watch and ended the call.

I reached the bottom of the stairs and he stared at me with a look of....was that adoration?

I felt my breathe get caught in my throat.

The frown on his face slowly disappeared and a smile animated his handsome face.

"Baby you look really good"

"Thank you" I smiled back and released a shaky breathe.

He tilted his head slightly, "Nervous?"

I nodded.

"Don't worry, you'll do just fine. I have something for you" he said and walked to the closest sofa which had his jacket on it. He pulled out a glass box from it.

"Happy First Day of school" he handed the little box over to me.

My heart warmed up by his gesture. If it were someone else I would have probably jumped on the person in excitement, but with Shawn things are different.

There was a gold Chanel wristwatch in the box. Seems like he knew about my love for anything Chanel. The watch was adorned with faux diamond stones which glistened in the light.

"Thank you" my voice croaked as if I was fighting the urge to cry.
Well actually I was.

"Anything for you. Now let's go and have breakfast" he smiled at me before walking to the dining room.

If you haven't noticed, Shawn is my step father, and GG is his little girl.

He and my mom have been married for two years now, well not exactly but their anniversary is just around the corner. He has been nothing but nice to me but accepting him as my father has been difficult for me.

I know you are probably wondering what happened to my dad, well he is alive. For now that's all to say about him.

He's supposed to be the one in Shawn's place trying to calm my nerves, but as always, he's never there for anything huge in my life. He's never there at all, be it a big or a small occasion in my life.

I shook my head to shrug off my depressing thoughts. I walked into the kitchen after Shawn.

"What is that?" mom asked curiously and stared at the box in my hand.

"Happy First Day of school from Shawn"

I'm supposed to address him as dad but_ I just don't know why I can't.

"Soo pweeetyyy" GG squealed.

"I think I should keep this for you till you are old enough to use it" mom said greedily and tried to snatch the box from me.

"I can keep it myself" I quickly hid the box behind me.

"Silly child" mom muttered.

A/N
I know this chapter is quite short, the next few are just as short but I promise you I'm working on making the others longer as the story progresses.

Tell me what you think of the first chapter.
