"Steve!"

You watched him turn to look at her, the soft crystal clear illumination of tears forming a barrier on his eyes. In the split moment you realised that he was reaching to hug her with such glee, you felt like you were going to be sick. You watched as they embraced, her lips on his cheek. Hatred coursed through your veins caused by insecurities running rough your mind.

"I missed you," he told her.

She laughed. "You just said goodbye to me a moment ago. I thought you were already gone!" she said before letting go of him and straightening out her uniform. How proper of her. The sarcasm already ruled your head. "Who is she?" she asked.

You could see the deliberation in Steve's eyes. To tell or not to tell. You decided for him. "I was lost," you said, giving her a fake smile but biting the insides of your cheeks to stop from crying. The pain did its job well and with a little help from looking upward to pretend you didn't know where you were, you found yourself tear free but so full of loathing for the brunette who had a spell cast over him.

"Oh," she said. "And what on earth are you wearing?!"

You looked down. "Fashion-forward style?" you tried.

She smiled. "Oh never mind. Come on. I can get you something more comfortable."

You nodded, looking to Steve who was too busy looking at her.

You sighed as the three of you walked back to the base, those two ahead and you trailing behind.

*****

She led you into an army tent filled with empty beds that didn't look too comfortable. She seemed to get your look. "They're not like the ones at home," she said, "but they'll do."

You nodded, thanking her through bitterly grit teeth. You wanted her gone. You hated to be like this, but you knew that between the two of you, she'd always come first. You only needed to get that remote.

She handed you the blanket she'd been carrying along with some clothing before turning to Steve. "I'm sure you know where to go," she said. You fought the urge to leap at her and tackle her down, wiping that smug look off her pretty little face. Wow jealousy did strange things.

They left you to change and you immediately saw just how different it was for him. Here people seemed... Different - obviously. But a different that suited Steve's different. You sighed, picking up the t-shirt.

*****

At night you could hear giggles from the tent next to you. You were sure that was Peggy's tent, seeing as giggles that high pitched could only have been from a girl and she seemed like the only girl on base.

You heard a clear of a throat. "May I come in?" That voice sounded awfully familiar, but you couldn't quite place it.

"Uh, yeah. Sure," you said, sitting up and swinging your legs round off the bed to make you look more presentable.

A man walked in and immediately you got the connection. You'd seen a picture of him at Tony's place, making you slightly uncomfortable now that he was here in the flesh. "Hi," he said, smiling and holding out his hand. "I'm - "

You shook his hand. "Tony's dad."

He frowned. "I'm sorry?"

You realised your mistake. "Uh no sorry I must have you mistaken. I had a uh, a friend who's father was in this regiment and uh... Hi." You ended your small ramble, laughing at how awkward you were. "I'm (Y/N)."

"Howard Stark."

*****

As the both of you delved into conversation, Peggy's giggles only got louder.

"What are they doing in there?" he muttered to himself before realising you'd heard it. He chuckled. "Ah. They're probably fonduing."

You frowned. "Like bread and cheese?"

He nodded. "Yep. Just like that."

You nodded, slightly reassured that he wasn't screwing her in the next tent, less than five metres away from yours.

"So anyways, as I was saying," he said, continuing on about his story. You tried and failed to pay attention, feeling regret that you wouldn't be able to share these moments with Tony when you got back.

You were going to go for that remote when Steve got tired of fonduing and went to sleep. It was a plan.
