Peeta x Reader

You quickly walk down the long hallway, maneuvering around people and Peacekeepers, until you make your way to the room at the end of the hallway.

You twist the door handle and push open the door, walking inside and immediately running up to Peeta and hugging him.

"Peeta," you breathe, "I'm so sorry."

Peeta wraps his arms around you and nuzzles his head into your neck. You can feel his tears on your skin.

"I'm so, so, sorry." You repeat, eyes watering.

Peeta was just reaped to be a tribute to fight in the Hunger Games. You were so scared for him; he's only a baker. He probably won't survive and that frightens you.

When he was reaped your heart stopped. You froze in your stance and couldn't even blink. You even stopped breathing for a while. Then you saw him walking towards the stage and you starting crying. It was more like sobbing; you didn't make any noise.

You knew he was afraid as well. For months before the reaping you both talked about how horrible it would be to be reaped. You joked about it sometimes but usually the topic of conversation was serious.

You repeated your 'sorry' sentences again as you started kissing his head, then his temple, then his cheek. You both held onto each other throughout it. Then you resumed your hugging in silence.

"Don't forget about me," you hear Peeta say, muffled because he's still nuzzled in your neck.

"I could never forget you," you say, "how could I? You're my best friend, you're my family, you're my home. I'll remember you until the day I die."

"And I you."

You shut your eyes for a moment and breathe in. You should tell him. You should tell him how you feel about him. You'll never be able to speak to him again unless he wins the Games.

You pull back and then lean forward, but you chicken out at the last minute and kiss Peeta on the cheek instead of his lips.

You linger your lips on his cheek for a moment, then you pull back, and Peeta is staring at you blushed. He goes to say something but then a Peacekeeper opens the door.

"Time's up." He says, and grabs Peeta by the arm.

You held his hand during the kiss so as he gets pulled away, your hands slip away from each other. Peeta looks at you before he leaves and mouths a sentence.

Only after he's gone do you realize that he said "I love you".
