The car engine rumbles until it finally haults to a stop. Pulling out your earphones, you look outside the car window to see the house you've parked in front of. It's tall, double storied, and has a picket fence out the front. The house itself looks decent; the paint on the walls still look good and the roof seems intact, but the garden is an absolute mess; weeds tangled around the fence and bushes covering the entrance to the front door.

"What do you think?" Your dad asks you, turning around from the front seat.

You look back at him blankly but he just laughs it off.

"What about you, Tommy? Like our new home?" He asks.

Your little brother, Tommy, who is three years younger than you, looks up from his Nintendo DS and leans forward to look out your window. You're expecting him to have a little whine and say that it looks like Grandma just barfed on it (he's such a nut sometimes), but instead he just smiles.

"I love it!" He shouts.

Your dad instantly lights up.

"See, (Y/n)? The house is great." He says.

"It is great, dad." You smile, "We just need to fix up the garden, that's all."

"Well, I agree with you on that one."

"Honey, why don't you and Tommy bring the boxes in and (Y/n) and I will start unpacking." Suggests your mum from the passenger seat.

"Great idea, love."

He leans over and gives your mother a quick kiss on the lips before turning around, unbuckling his seatbelt, and exiting the car. Tommy's already out as soon as dad takes the first step outside, and you just sigh while you wrap your earphones around your phone.

"Sweetie, it'll be fine. I bet you'll end up loving it here. It'll just take some time." Your mum says, looking over at you.

"I know, mum." You say, and give her a quick smile.

She smiles back at you and you both get out of the car. Dad and Tommy have already opened the front gate and the house door, and have brought in two boxes already. You walk across the footpath that leads to the front porch but trip over some cracks on the way. You tell your mum to be careful, asking if she wants help, but she just waves you off and avoids the cracks as best she can.

The boards on the front porch squeak under your feet, and you can already tell that it's hollow. First thing on the list will have to be the porch, then it'll be easier to do the garden without the front porch braking everytime someone takes a step on it.

Tommy whizzes past you, running down the footpath and amazingly avoiding all the cracks, down to the car where he tries to take out a big box. You can see your dad trying to pry Tommy's fingers off the box and telling him it's too heavy for him to carry. That puts a genuine smile on your face and you walk inside your new home.

It's a bit dusty but it looks big. Without any furniture it looks like you could hide a whole country inside. For some reason, you love empty houses. It just feels sort of cool and gives you an excuse to ski around the house in your socks and shout down the hallways to create an echo.

"How about you go pick out your bedroom?" Your mother says behind you, finally making it inside the house, "I'll start unpacking."

"But you need help. I can pick my bedroom later." You say.
