Now Jane knew of Michael's financial situation and put two and two together. "Children, why not have breakfast outside?" she said as the three children walked outside, curiosity and concern evident as they watched their father. "Mary Poppins, please stay," Mary raised an eyebrow but perched on the couch in the living room. Michael sat on the armchair, and Jane stood in front of them.

"Michael, when's the last time you've eaten?" Michael blushed furiously. "Look, we had to pay the bills, Jane, I-" Mary Poppins rounded on him, concern on every feature. "Michael Banks, have you been neglecting yourself?" It was more of a demand, and she said it quite sharply. Michael didn't relent. "I've been doing fine, and it's been keeping our head above water."

"Michael..." Michael rose from his chair, about to say something. But suddenly, he stumbled and clutched his head with one hand, using the other to steady himself. Mary Poppins rose, and Jane rushed to his side, placing a hand around his back, holding him up. She felt Michael lean into her touch, and she shared a concerned glance with Mary.

"Right, Michael. Food," Mary declared. Michael didn't have the heart to argue.

Chapter 2: A Flicker of Hope
