Chapter 1: The Midnight Prank

It was a quiet night at Lockwood & Co., the renowned psychic investigation agency. Lucy Carlyle and George Cubbins, Lockwood's trusted colleagues and friends, had decided to play a harmless prank on their fearless leader. With mischievous grins on their faces, they tiptoed through the darkened hallways, careful not to wake any restless spirits that might be lurking.

As they reached the door to Lockwood's office, Lucy turned to George, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Are you ready for this, George?" she whispered, barely containing her laughter.

George nodded, his own grin widening. "Absolutely, Lucy. This is going to be epic."

With a shared nod, they pushed open the door and stepped inside. The room was dimly lit, the only source of light coming from a flickering candle on Lockwood's desk. The air was heavy with the scent of old books and dried herbs, a familiar aroma that always lingered in the office.

Their laughter died down as they took in the sight before them. Lockwood was slumped over his desk, fast asleep. His usually impeccable appearance was disheveled, his crumpled grey t-shirt clinging to his tired frame. Papers were scattered everywhere, covering every inch of the desk and floor. It was clear that Lockwood had been working tirelessly, even in his sleep.

Lucy's heart sank as she noticed the papercut on Lockwood's cheekbone, a thin line of blood staining his pale skin. She hurriedly grabbed a tissue from her pocket and gently dabbed at the wound, careful not to wake him. George, on the other hand, noticed the thinly sliced open hand and winced in sympathy.

"What happened to him?" Lucy whispered, her voice filled with concern.

George shook his head, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know, Lucy. But we need to wake him up before he hurts himself even more."

They exchanged worried glances before George reached out and gently shook Lockwood's shoulder. "Lockwood, wake up," he said softly.

Lockwood stirred, his eyes fluttering open. He blinked a few times, trying to focus on the two figures standing before him. "Lucy? George? What's going on?" he mumbled, his voice groggy with sleep.

Lucy couldn't help but smile at his dazed expression. "We thought we'd surprise you, Lockwood. But it seems like you've been working too hard."

Lockwood rubbed his eyes, finally taking in the chaos that surrounded him. "Ah, the paperwork. I must have fallen asleep. Sorry about that."

George chuckled, relief evident in his voice. "No worries, Lockwood. We just wanted to make sure you were okay."

Lockwood nodded, a grateful smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Thank you, both of you. I appreciate your concern."

Lucy glanced at the clock on the wall and sighed. "Well, it's late. We should probably clean up and get some rest."

As they began gathering the scattered papers, Lockwood's tired eyes met Lucy's. "You know, I couldn't ask for better partners. You two are always looking out for me."

Lucy smiled, her heart warming at his words. "And we always will, Lockwood. We're a team, after all."

With a renewed sense of camaraderie, they worked together to restore order to the office. Lockwood's exhaustion was evident, but his determination never wavered. As they finished tidying up, they exchanged knowing glances, silently promising to always be there for each other, no matter what challenges they faced.

Little did they know, this midnight prank would mark the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, one filled with danger, adventure, and the unbreakable bond of friendship.
