Prologue
"We need to stop this, Mara."
Napaawang ang bibig ko nang mga sandaling iyon. Hindi kaagad na proseso ang ibig sabihin ni Cain.
He was just so calm, unnerving. Cold. Distant.
Ano'ng nangyari samin?
"W.. what?" I asked with the most broken voice I've ever heard. Kahit ang sariling boses ay muntik pang hindi makilala.
"It was clear for your ears to hear, Mara. Hindi ko na kailangan pang ulitin."
Agad na namalisbis ang luha mula sa aking mata. My heart constricting painfully as I try my best to reach out to him. Pero umiwas siya. Iyong tipong nandidiri siya na mahawakan ko siya.
"Oh my God." saad ko nang matanto ang kaniyang dahilan. Bigla akong natakot.
Nanlulumo akong umiling. It can't be. No, please. It can't be.
"There's nothing for us to fight.." narinig ko kung paano nanghina ang kaniyang boses.
I looked at him. Even with his stoic face, I prayed that he'd at least show mercy at me. Awang-awa na ako sa sarili ko. Maawa naman sana siya sa'kin.
"Is this because of the baby?" I cried. Ni hindi na napigilan ang sarili. I was so transparent. So clear for him to see how painful it is for me to accept everything all at once.
"Cain.." iyak kong saad at nilapitan siya upang mahawakan ang kamay ngunit tinaboy lang niya iyon.
"May mga bagay na dapat tapusin, Mara."
"Pero, Cain.."
Umiling siya at pinanood lang akong sumalampak sa sahig. Sobrang lamig niya. This is not my Cain. This is not the man I've grown to love.
Halos manlumo ako nang makita ang pagtalikod niya. Nanlaki ang mga matang tiningnan kung paanong nakatakas sa mga kamay ko ang kaniyang paa.
"You promised me, Cain!" I shouted.
My heart is bleeding.
Sobra na akong nawalan. Tinakwil ng sariling pamilya. Nalaglag ang baby. Tapos.. siya?
"There are promises that are not really meant to be kept, Mara."
"No.." iling ko at gumapang papunta sa kaniya. Niyakap ko ang isa niyang paa ng sobrang higpit. Like my life depended on it. "No, Cain. Please, no."
"People come and go, Mara. The only permanent in this world is change. Not love. Not me. Not us."
