Six | He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not

Damon and I were in his bedroom. We didn't want to upset Stefan even more after his break up with Elena, so we'd left him alone. I sat on the edge of Damon's bed, facing him as he gently paced infront of me.

"Okay, so, uh -- " Damon was nervous. He kept rubbing the back of his neck in thought.

"Damon, please just tell me the truth." I sighed. The bed beside me sunk as he sat down. I turned my head slowly to look at him.

He was silent for a long moment before his eyes met mine, "Cassie, I never cheated on you. I spent a week and a half preparing for the biggest moment of my life. I wanted it to be perfect."

"What are you talking about?" I asked, furrowing my brows in confusion.

"I was gonna ask you to marry me." Damon replied.

"What?" I gasped. My brows still remained furrowed and my mouth had fallen open in surprise. My breath had hitched in my throat as my heart picked up pace. Marry me?

"I was meeting with a wedding planner." He told me, "I wanted to get her ideas on how to propose and her wedding ideas were everything you loved. I brought her flowers and cake to see which ones would work best. The jewellery was a ring. The ring."

"I -- uh, I..." I was truly speechless.

"I wanted to marry you, Cassie." Damon said, his eyes clouding over, "I fell in love with you since the first day I ever saw you. You were so different, so beautiful and so funny. I was mesmerized by everything you did. Every moment I was with you was the best of my life and I wanted to spent the rest of my immortal life with you."

Some of his words caused confusion. I frowned, "Since the first day we met? We met before you met Katherine and you told me all the deep feelings you had for her?"

Damon shook his head, denying it, "I never had feelings for Katherine. She compelled mine and Stefan's love. I always had feelings for you. I thought you'd never like me back in the same way, so everytime we had a heart to heart, I told you it was about Katherine. I lied. Everything was about you."

We'd never spoken about this before.

"I liked you the moment we met too, Damon, but you always spoke to me about how you loved the way that Katherine laughed, and how she would do this and that. I thought you were so in love with her. And no matter how much it hurt, I didn't want to get inbetween that. Katherine knew I liked you and she tortured me about it for so long. She pretended that she loved you to get at me. I didn't know how evil and manipulative she was until then."

"You never told me that." Damon grew angry, "That bitch."

"I know." I looked down at the ground for a moment, trying to grasp what was happening. My eyes met Damon's again, "You wanted to marry me?"

"Yes. And then I came home one day to see your clothes had gone and so had you. All I had left of you was a note that said 'Goodbye Damon.'" Damon told me. My eyes matched his, we both had tears in them. As I blinked, a tear cascaded down my cheek.

"Hey." His hand rested on my cheek, letting his thumb brush away the tear.

Without realising, it was almost like muscle memory, I wrapped my own hand around his hand that was resting on my cheek, rubbing the back of it with my thumb. With my other hand I picked up the necklace, that had hung round my neck for over a hundred years, between my thumb and finger. It was a small locket with a picture of Damon and I inside.
