Forty-Five | Closer

My eyes felt heavy as I opened them. I was laying down, facing the back of the sofa. I noticed a blanket had been placed on top of me. I sat up, holding the blanket around me for warmth. I remained on the sofa, scanning my surroundings, trying to figure out what had happened.

"Klaus?" I questioned, noticing a familiar figure on the sofa opposite. My voice was low and sore from crying.

"Kol had at me this morning." Klaus spoke, his voice almost at a whisper, "He's gone now."

"You daggered him?" I asked, briefly glancing to the floor.

"No." Klaus replied, "Do you want to tell me what exactly happened? Because he clearly wasn't in the mood for conversation and wanted to tear my heart out."

"I, uh..." I glanced up at him, "I told him I drank from you."

Klaus' eyes widened in surprise, "What happened to it being our little secret?"

"He needed to know. Our relationship wasn't gonna go anywhere, anyway." I replied, wrapping the blanket tighter around me.

"I thought you liked him a lot." Klaus said.

"I realised my feelings for him weren't actual feelings. I liked him because he came into my life when I felt lonely, and I played on that. I think he was just a distraction. I can't string him along, he needs someone who can take care of him and his psychotic rage and I don't think I can be that person. I can't be like Elijah."

"You don't have to tell me all of this, Cassie." Klaus said.

"I know, I just feel like I need to let it out." I sighed, "Look, I need blood but I'm scared that I won't be able to control it."

"You won't know unless you try. Do you want to try a blood bag?" He asked, taking one from behind his back where he sat.

"If I go insane, then I will allow you to lock me up in that weird room you kept Elena in. I suggest getting better security this time though." I said with slight humor.

He smiled a little before he handed me the blood bag. I looked at it and squeezed it a little in hesitation. I ripped the top off and glanced at Klaus.

"Remember, control." He said.

I sucked through the tube, the blood slowly entered my mouth. I drank at least half the bag before pulling away. I needed more but I had to control it. I breathed heavily and looked at Klaus, smiling at the fact I had pulled away.

"Okay, that's enough." I told him.

"Are you sure?" He asked.

I nodded and handed him the blood bag, "Yes."

"You don't want anymore?" He asked, holding the blood bag towards me.

I was tempted but shook my head, "No."

"Good, that was a test." He said. I grinned at him, "How do you feel?"

"Good."

There was a knock on the door and Klaus left the room. I stared into the lit fireplace. I thought about Kol and how I used him as a distraction and then hurt him. Was I as bad as Elijah when he used me?
