Thirty-Eight | Growing Toxic

Late 2007

I was sitting on a bench in the park in New Orleans. It was a Saturday, which meant there were lots of kids and families around. I watched them all having fun, wishing I could have a life like theirs. Being human.

All I longed for was a family of my own.

"Cassandra." A voice said, breaking me from my trance.

I looked up and smiled, "Hey."

"I thought we arranged to meet at the bar?"

"I kind of got distracted." I replied.

He sat down, "By the beating hearts and the blood?"

I glared at him, "No, Klaus."

"Well, at least that phase is over now, love." He replied.

"I recklessly killed dozens of innocent people." I sighed, "I don't think I'll ever be over it."

"It'll be alright, we've all been through it. It's the people we love that help us through it." He replied getting at something.

I looked over to a family that were kicking a ball around, joyfully laughing. I sighed, "I just want to be normal."

"Haven't you heard the saying, normal is boring." He smirked.

I looked at him, "I'd rather be boring than have to kill something I once was to survive."

"I know what you mean but this is who you are, Cassie."

"I don't want to be like this, Klaus." I told him, feeling tears filling my eyes, "I never have."

"I know all about not being normal or human, Cassie, and I've been tortured for it." He replied.

I turned to him, "What do you mean?"

Klaus stood up, "How about a drink? I'll tell you all about it."

He held out his hand. I glanced up at him and gave him a small smile as I took his hand, "Okay."

My eyes fluttered open as I felt kisses being left on the bare skin of shoulder. I turned over to see Kol slightly leaning over me. I grumbled, "How long was I asleep?"

"Well, it's six a.m. now." Kol told me.

"So a long time." I chuckled before I draped my arms around his neck, "Did you get any sleep?"

"A bit. I mostly watched you sleep." Kol said.

I jokingly scrunched my nose up, "Creepy."

"Romantic." He corrected.

I laughed in response. He leant down and pressed his lips to mine. After a few seconds he pulled away. I turned my head to the window, it was still dark outside.
