"Distance never separates two hearts that really care, for our memories span the miles and in seconds we are there"
It was about 5 degree celsius in New York city. Kavya woke up at 6am rubbing her eyes and swiping off her alarm on her phone. This was yet another day amongst the 100 days of her 4 and a half month stay in the new city that she wished with all her heart that her college would cease to exist. No, it wasn't that she was not finding the new city or the college appealing, it was just the weather that would urge her to curl up in her bed all day. But she knew her mid term exams were approaching and she had to attend her classes. She woke up, brushed her teeth, and took a shower. Once she was out wrapped in a towel, like everyday, she checked her phone for messages from her mother. 'Good morning princess! Yet another day passed without seeing my beautiful daughter. Dad had a great day at work today it seems, and I had gone out shopping with Kamya Aunty. I have bought something for you, which I'd better keep a surprise till you visit home. Its late now and I am tired too, going to sleep! Have a wonderful day my Barbie doll! Love you and miss you!' She smiled, this was her routine. A message from her mom daily made her feel close to her family. She replied 'It's so freezing cold here, I wish you would wake me up like you always do, hugging me tight and making me feel so warm! I love you too mom! Good Night to You!'
She then quickly dressed herself into a tank top and denim. But well that was not even the beginning, she then wore a leather jacket over it, then thik fur coat, then a muffler, and then really warm long boots. This was her daily attire. She couldn't still get accustomed with the weather there. She drove herself to her college, the car that she had purchased second hand just 2 days ago, with the money that she had made working as a waitress at Munchkins Bakery and the rest of her savings from the money sent for her monthly spendings by her parents. She hadn't yet told her parents about her job since she knew that they would, just like any other Indian parents, consider it a very low grade job and would also want her to call her back home. Not that she didn't want to go back, infact she did really wish every day that had she been at her home, she wouldn't have to bother about her spendings, about her groceries, about her clothes, about cleaning, about earning, about the weather, and about so many other things that were causing her a troubles there! But then she would remind herself that she is a strong girl and nothing in life will come easy after all.
A large building appearing like a mansion came to her vision, that stood firmly behind large metal gates. It was her college, and its campus was one of the very few reasons that she loved New York. She met Sean Paulsen, her classmate with extremely white skin and blond spikes hair, at the entrance. Sean was one of the people she knew well by now in the new city. He not only was his classmate, but he also stayed near to her residence and she had traveled back from college with him many a times before she finally bought her own car. Sean was born and brought up in New York and was also easy to get along with. And he was really handsome.
Kavya: Hey Sean! how are you this morning!
Sean: I am in fine fettle! how are you?
Kavya (blushing at his accent): I am great too, except for your city still doesn't seem to comfort me with a warmer weather.
Sean (chuckling): Oh definitely it will get warmer soon. Atleast I hope it does!
They walk together to their class talking about their approaching exams. As they get in the class, Kavya takes her seat next to Elizabeth D'souza, the only other person apart from Sean that she felt comfortable around. Although Sean was her friend before she even met Eli, she somehow never happened to sit next to him in class. Her seating arrangement was such that Eli was her partner, and she found her really sweet. Unlike Sean, Eli was from UK, and Kavya found it very congenial. She could share her feelings and her apprehensions about staying away from her family. Eli also worked with her at the bakery, which gave them quite a lot of time to spend together. Also, once while at lunch, Kavya had introduced Eli to Sean, and they started having their meals together quite often. Eli and Sean's amiable attitude was another reason why she liked the new city. After about four lectures now, it was time for the lunch break. Kavya and Eli sat on their usual table and ordered lunch. Kavya couldn't find time cooking in the morning and thus would eat at their canteen everyday.
