as we pull in to the warehouse, aiden begins to ask a bunch of questions.
i just look at damien and he nods his head.
"i'll give him a tour, don't worry about it." he whispers as he gets out of the car.
i sigh and lock my car behind me as we walk to the warehouse. caleb's car is already here.
damien holds the door for aiden & i as we walk inside.
"caleb!" damien shouts upon entering.
why is he calling him? i didn't think he had a job today.
caleb comes around the corner wearing a white shirt with an open plaid flannel & jeans with work boots.
his hair is slightly gelled, a new look for him.
"babe, i would love to go on this job with you-- but i gotta give aiden a tour and show him the ropes. caleb.. would you mind going with vanessa?" damien asks.
i raise my eyebrows, "i need someone to go with me? since when?"
"since now. it's two people in this job, come on.. suck it up." damien says, kissing my forehead.
i watch as aiden walks around the room, eyes scanning over all of the file cabinets and plaques from important jobs we've completed.
damien pulls out the job folder and places it in my hands before leading aiden out of the room.
"damien, wait!" i call after him.
he peeks his head back in the room.
"do we need our bullet vests?" i ask.
he laughs, "no.. you should be fine, they shouldn't be carrying.. it's an easy job."
"okay, thanks." i say as he leaves the room.
my eyes meet with caleb's for a moment but i walk past him the weapon room.
i pick up a decent sized gun and toss it to him, throwing him an extra clip in case he needs a reload.
"are you mad at me?" he asks, staring at me.
i shake my head, "not at all. are you mad at me?"
"n-no? why would you ask that?" he replied.
i laugh, "i don't know.. for the same reason you asked me, i guess."
he says nothing after many moments of silence so i walk past him and grab the file from the table.
i hear him following behind me as we go outside together.
"i'll drive." he says, walking to the driver's side of the escalade.
i nod and toss him the keys.
he catches them and gets in the car, starting it as i climb into the passenger's seat.
"you alright?" he asks.
i stare out the window, "yeah, i'm fine."
"oh okay." he mumbles as we start to drive to our job location.
i sigh and watch everything go by out the window.
it's so quiet.. i hate this. it makes me sick to my stomach and i shake my head.
"listen, it can't be like this.. please." i beg.
he furrows his eyebrows, "like what?"
"you know what.. don't tell me you don't know what." i answer.
he continues to look confused, "i have no idea what you're talking about.. we're all good."
"mhm, okay. nevermind." i blurt, dropping the subject.
after a few more minutes of silence my thoughts run wild. i replay memories of us listening to music in the car.. all the times that he loved me and cared so much.
i remember how happy we were and suddenly a tear slips down my cheek.
"whoa, whoa.. what's going on? what happened?" he asks, staring at me.
i quickly wipe away the tear, "nothing, it's just from the cold.. it happens."
i hear him take a deep breathe and i glance at the heat button that is already set on a high volume.
----
when we pull into the grocery store parking lot, we see a lot of cars parked out back that look like ours.
is more of the team here?
"you ready?" i ask.
he nods his head and we get out of the car, walking cautiously towards the back entrance.
yelling is heard from inside and i look at caleb. his expressions change.. we both feel uneasy, i can tell.
we pull our guns from our holsters and approach the door with caution.
he nods at me and just as i'm about to open the door, it slams open.. startling the both of us.
men in black uniforms come rushing out to their cars.
they pay no attention to us even though we're in plain sight.. maybe they're not on our side, but not the enemies either? is it possible to be neutral?
"what do we do!?" i shout to caleb through the crowd.
he looks at me with confusion.
we both have no idea what to do so i press down on my earpiece twice.
it rings three times before damien picks up.
"what's going on?" he asks, knowing that this is usually only for important issues.
i take a deep breathe, "yeah there was a shit ton of guys in the building and they just ran out.. do we risk going in? what's going on?"
"their suspicion must be on really low alert.. proceed with caution but it should be super simple."
"damien, why were all of those men here? why did they run out.. it's not very settling."
he sighs, "i don't know. be careful & you'll be okay.. if it's too bad you can come back & we can send jack out to do it."
"alright, thanks." i say, pressing my earpiece again.
it hangs up the call and i raise my gun.
"i'll scope, you follow." caleb orders.
i blink, "what? i always scope."
"my point exactly." he replies, walking inside.
i shrug and follow behind him, gun raised in front of me.
he walks to the edge of the first doorway, "clear."
i follow close behind him, sure to keep my eyes open for any possible suspects.
our file said a brunette man and a red-head woman.
then we hear footsteps that break the silence.
i make sure both of us are hidden for when they come around the corner.
he is ducked behind the giant wall of storage bins and i'm in the row next to him.
he looks back at me and shakes his gun as if to ask for approval.
i shake my head and pull my knife from my holster and he does the same.
i point to my knife and then point to my neck, making a dead face.
his eyes widen and he mouths, "dead?"
i nod my head and i see his reaction, but he relaxes his shoulders and gets ready to strike.
i see in the shadow from the doorway that it's a younger man but we can't risk us being exposed if it's not one of the two people we need. we rarely kill but we're going to have to.
finally, the footsteps come closer and he walks into the room.
caleb leaps and plunges the knife into his neck, pulling it out quickly.
he hit the perfect spot, no screaming.. just gurgling as blood sprays from his neck.
"awesome, nice job." i whisper to caleb.
his breathing is rapid but he has a slight smile, so that's a good sign.
i look down at the man who is bleeding out in front of us and he has blonde hair-- not someone we need.
"ready?" i ask, putting my knife back in my holster.
he nods and slides his knife back in his holster as well. we hold our guns up in front of us and walk slowly towards the entrance to the hallway.
it's cold back here, probably to keep all of the imported goods fresh.
it smells like cardboard & bleach which isn't a good mix.
we step out in the hallway together at the same time and we're greeted by the sight of a red-headed woman who matches the file.
"he's in the office, i got the bitch." i tell him as i shoot the woman right in the thigh.
she screams out in pain and i rush to put handcuffs on her. i take her gun from her and place it in my waistband.
she lays and cries on the floor, unable to move.
i quickly move to the office where caleb is holding the man at gunpoint-- they both have their guns aimed at each other.
i hold up my gun towards the man, "shoot him and you're dead."
caleb glances at me with a look in his eyes that i can't read.
"vanessa." he whispers.
i keep my eyes focused on the man in front of us and only glance to caleb for a second.
does he want me to respond? what was that for?
my eyes bounce to the door and then back to him.
he shakes his head.. he's not going to bolt.
what do we do? **
"drop your weapon and no one gets hurt." i demand.
he just laughs, "not gonna happen. i know your type, i'm not going to prison for life."
"you're right.. you're going to hell instead." caleb says, firing his gun at the man's head.
i see the man grip the gun and i already know what's coming. i push caleb out of the way as fast as possible as i see the man's brain and blood explode against the white wall.
caleb's expression goes neutral and he loses his balance, falling to the ground.
everything seems to move in slow motion as i watch the familiar crimson liquid seep through his white t-shirt.
i lift his head up to rest in my lap and pull off his flannel and my jacket and shirt, wrapping them all tightly around his chest.
his blood coats my hands. my body goes numb and my ears are ringing.
i hold down on my earpiece for an emergency, "e-emergency b-backup. caleb. gunshot to the chest."
i break down in sobs as i hold his body in my arms.
he stares up at me.
he grins, "h-hey. don't cry."
i keep pressure on his wound with one hand and run my other hand through his hair.
"y-you're going to be okay, you have to stay with me.. i'm not losing you." i tell him.
i watch as he swallows, trying to speak.
he winces as he places his shaky hand on my cheek, "i love you, vanessa."
his eyes begin to roll back and i lift him up more.
"n-no, caleb! you can't! stay with me!" i sob.
it feel like my soul has died, my heart is shattered. my eyes are waterfalls as i continue to keep pressure on his wound with my now blood-soaked clothes.
i kiss him, i kiss his cheeks and adjust him again, trying to keep his senses alive.
he can't leave me. he's not gone. he's here.
i lift him up even more, holding him in my arms. he's still warm and i continue to sob against his shoulder.
"no, no.. i didn't get to say that i love you too. i love you, caleb. y-you can't go, you have to stay." i cry.
i'm only wearing a bra and leggings as damien, jack and a few others run in the room.
they haul the crying, bleeding woman in the hallway out and take caleb from my arms.
i sob even harder as damien picks me up in his arms bridal style, carrying me outside.
i'm shaking and sobbing as i hold onto damien's shirt. he walks to one of the escalades and slowly gets in the backseat, careful to adjust me correctly on his lap.
all i can hear now is our breathing, our rapid heartbeats & my ears ringing.
it feels like a piece of me has died. damien kisses the top of my head and rubs my back as silent tears continue to fall.

i pass out moments later.
