I looked up at his shocked his face. "Your mom?" he whispered. I nodded. "You don't have to-"
"I want to." I said. He nodded and I led the way inside the hospital. I passed Sasha and I waved. "Hi Sasha."
"Hi Vie, who's this?" she asked.
"I'm Jasper." he said smiling.
"Do you know Lourine?"
"No, I'm here to meet her." he said quietly.
"Go right in." I took a deep breath and walked slowly to mom's room.
"Hi mom." I whispered. She looked even worse then yesterday.
"Hi Vie," she said tiredly.
"How are you feeling?" I ask knowing the answer.
"Better," she lied. "Vie, who's this?" she asked.
"This is Jasper, I'm doing the project with him. We have to write a song together."
"You should have told me he was coming, I would have put on makeup." she said quietly. I smiled and so did Jasper. I sat in the seat next to mom's bed. "Do you want to sit Jasper?" she asked.
"Sure," he said sitting next to me.
"When he came in I thought it was Henry at first." she said softly. I looked over at Jasper and saw he looked uncomfortable.
"Did you have to talk to your brother?" I asked him.
"Not really, you looked like you wanted to talk with me." I rolled my eyes and looked back at mom who was struggling to stay awake.
"Mom, why don't you get some rest, I'll be back tomorrow." I got up, but she reached out and grabbed my hand.
"Are you living by yourself?" she asked. I looked into her tired eyes and I knew I couldn't lie to her.
"Yes," I said breaking eye contact. She sighed and when I looked up tears were in her eyes.
"I'm so sorry baby, you were alone all this time." she said. "I don't want you to be alone anymore. Please don't stay in the house alone, find somewhere to stay." she pleaded with me, her eyes looked so sad and desperate.
"I will mommy,. Go to sleep, I'll be here in the morning." I whispered. Mom struggled to stay awake a moment more, but sleep overcame her and her grip loosened on my arm, and finally let go. I wiped away one of my tears that had fallen and stood up.
"You don't have to be strong Vie." Jasper said taking my hand in his.
"Good, cause I can't," I said as a flood of tears fell. He hugged me and at first I was shocked, but then I hugged him back.
"I can't tell you it will be okay, because I don't know that, but I can tell you I will be here to help you. And so will Leo." I pulled away wiping my eyes.
"Don't tell Leo." I said looking up at him.
"I won't, but why don't you want him to know."
"I don't want him to leave me."
"Why do you think he would leave, Leo isn't like that?"
"Because everyone leaves me. My sister, my dad, my best friend and now my mom is leaving. I can't take someone else leaving." I said looking down at my feet.
"Vie, are you scared that I'll leave you?" he asked softly. I nodded slowly. "I won't leave you Vie, I'm here for you, and so is Leo. Come on, I'll drive you home." he said holding out his hand.
"No, we have a project to do." I said wiping away the last of my tears and standing up straight. Jasper looked at me with amazement.
"How do you do that." he whispered.
"Do what?" I asked him.
"Stay so strong. After my mom left and my dad remarried I couldn't do that. I was horrible, I pushed everyone away, even Leo, but he was good enough friend that he stayed."
"I've been living this for a while, I knew this was going to happen. When my sister.." I cleared my throat. "When my sister..."
"You don't have to-"
"I want to, I haven't told anyone and I need to. When my sister died, I lost it. I almost ended it. I almost killed myself. There was no one there to stop me. I was home alone. I almost did it. But I saw my sister so full of life, that she never got to live. And that got me thinking, I shouldn't take life for granted, because some people don't have the luxury of being able to live their life. So I stopped and I never tried again. But sometimes, in my darkest moments, I wished I did it. I wouldn't have to do this. But then I think of mom, having to do this all alone, and I feel guilty that I would even think that." I finish my story and close my eyes.
"Vie, you are truly an amazing person." Jasper said after a moment. "If I had to go through that, I wouldn't be alive, I wouldn't be able to stop myself. You are amazing, but you are alone, and I don't want you to be alone anymore. Let me in Vie, let me help you." he said.
I looked up into his caring eyes and I felt the walls I built to keep people out break. "Help me," I whimpered and I started to sob. All the tears I couldn't cry before came out. He hugged me and I hugged him back. I don't know how long we stayed like this, but we walked back to the car and I slid in the backseat and Jasper slid in the front seat.
"What took you so long? And I thought you had a shift?" Leo asked.
"Leo I don't volunteer at the hospital." I said quietly. "I was visiting my mom. She's fighting cancer." I said with my eyes closed, I didn't want to see the face he gave me, pity and surprise.
"What?" he said after a second. "Vie, I-I..."
"You don't have to say anything. Can we still work on the project?" I ask.
"Yeah, I called my mom, she said we can work there." he said as we pulled away from the hospital
