Sing To Me While I'm Dying

Chapter Seventeen

I was sitting on my bed being held by Jasper. I have my head on his chest listening to his heartbeat. I closed my eyes and contented myself with the steady thumping of his heart.
"My heart beats for you Vie." He whispered, his voice rumbling in my ear.
"And mine for you." I whisper back. "I'm scared, I do not want to go back to school."
"It will be fine, just say you were in a car crash." I pulled my head off his lap and have him a hard look.
"Your not the one in the wheelchair."
"No, but I'm in love with the person who is." I roll my eyes and he smiled.
"Your like a love sick puppy."
"Why yes I am." He pecks my lips and stands up stretching. "Would you like some dinner?" My stomach was twisted in knots, just thinking about eating made me feel sick. I shook my head and he frowned. "At least try." I sigh and he helps me into my wheelchair. He wheeled me into the kitchen and parked me in front of the table. Leo sat across from me at the table and looked up when I came in. Lizzy was cooking something no the stove.
"Jasper, did you ever go home? Your parents are probably worried sick!"
"They don't care about me." He says sitting beside me. "I went home a few weeks ago to get some of my stuff, I was practically kicked out." Lizzy shakes her head stirring the huge pot.
"That's another man I Want to set straight, your father. I don't agree with anything he does anymore. He used to be an amazing man." Jasper's mouth was pressed in a thin line. I take his hand and he seems to relax.
"Can we go see my mother after dinner?"
"Yeah, do you want us all to come or...?"
"I want to be alone, Jasper will you drive me there?"
"Yeah, no problem." Lizzie put the plate of food in front of me and Jasper and came back with two more for herself and Leo. Just as she sat down Ian walked into the kitchen.
"Hello dear, Leo, Jasper, And Vie. How are you feeling?"
"Okay," I said quietly. He went into the kitchen and came out with another plate of food for himself. He sat next to Lizzy kissing her on the head. We ate in silence, well they ate, I was too scared to stomach the food. When we were done Jasper rolled me out the door and towards the car.
When we got to the hospital, he wheeled me to my mother's room and stopped outside the door. He let go of the handles and took a step back.
"I'll stay out here." I smiled and rolled slowly into my mother's room.
"Hey mom," I say quietly when I see she is awake.
"Hey Vie!" She looks pale and thin, like always.
"How are you feeling?"
"Better, And you?"
"I'm feeling better too mom. I just wanted to see you. I am going back to school tomorrow. I'm scared mom, I'm afraid of going back to school. How sad is that?"
"It's not sad, it's understandable! Come here," she held out he arms and I rolled over to her. She wrapped her arms around me and I put my head in the crook of her neck.
"I'm scared mommy."
"I know baby." And I know by the way she talked she knew I wasn't talking about school anymore. "You told me it was Henry?"
"Yes it was him."
"Why don't you charge him with attempted murder?"
"He wasn't the one who hit me and he'll just buy his way out of court again. We don't have to money to waste on him." I stayed with my mother for about an hour before she looked as if she was about to fall asleep. I patted her hand an smiled.
"Go to sleep mom, I'll see you after school." She gave me a weak smile before her head lolled back onto her pillow. I rolled out of my mother's room and I saw Jasper was sitting down the hall. He walked over and grabbed the handles and wheeled me out of the hospital without a word.
