CHAPTER 35 - STAY STRONG

*BERK*

Matilda ran through the halls of the castle.

Her heart was pounding.

Her stomach was kicking.

Her head was hurting.

She ran down the stairs and faced her brother, tears in his eyes as in his hand was the letter with the worst news they could ever face.

Around them, survivors of Strathclyde – afraid.

Tears streamed down her face – she had composed herself since Snotlout had broken the news to her but now she needed to see it for herself.

And all the proof was present.

Snotlout descended the stairs, the Vikings gathered as Rose and Ivy comforted each other. The place they had made home was now gone as Gawain tried to come with terms with how things had changed.

His father, Eoghan.

His mother, Joan.

His siblings, Isobel, Catrina, and Hendry.

The governesses, cooks, soldiers, and footmen.

The valets, ladies-in-waiting, stable boys, blacksmiths, entertainers, farmers and fishermen.

Everything and everyone they had known was gone – all but the people that stood before them now.

Their grief would overcome them – they had all lost so much.

But the people needed a leader and although her heart broke, Matilda knew what she had to.

She dropped to one knee and bowed before her brother.

"All Hail, Gawain Haldane, the third of his name...King of the Strathclydians..." She declared, and the people of Strathclyde did the same.

Dropping to one knee, they bowed before him. "All hail Gawain Haldane, the third of his name, King of the Strathclydians..." They announced as Gawain, struggling with his heartbreak tried to remain calm. Rose walked up to him and took his hand, reassuring him it will all be okay, and he smiled, accepting the terrible turn of fate.

"Long live the King!"

Rose sat with Gawain in his bedroom, comforting him. "I can't do this..." He said as Rose stroked his head.

"Yes you can..." She said. "You have trained your entire life for this."

"I'm not ready..." He added. "I never expected it like this...so suddenly."

"I know..." Rose assured him. "But I believe in you and your people believe in you. Your sister believes in you and I know that while things are so difficult now, you will overcome it and be the most magnificent king that the world has ever seen. You will continue your father's legacy and carve your own..."

Rose's words were inspirational and calming and Gawain squeezed her hand. "If I have you by my side, I know I can face the world."

They smiled and kissed passionately, things getting heated until Ivy ran through the door. "Rose!" She cried, forcing the couple apart. "You will not believe who is here..."
