CHAPTER 38 - JOURNEY TO THE PAST

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

*BERK – 25 YEARS AGO*

HICCUP'S POV

In a flash of white light, my eyes shot opened to see I was on Berk...but it wasn't Berk?

It was dark, torches were alight above, and I looked around.

Berk was different...very different.

I looked around and saw it looked very similar to the time when we were killing and hunting dragons. Cages and traps were laid out, people were on patrol with cannons stationed at all the high points.

Someone walked straight through me and I realized I was not here, just witnessing the past.

Isolde.

She was pregnant with Astrid, clearly, and I followed her as she headed towards a house – my house.

Inside, my mom lay on blankets and was sweating profusely.

Dad was next to her, holding her hand and pressing a damp towel against her forehead.

She was in labor.

"Is there a way we can delay it?" Dad asked Isolde and she shook her head.

"Valka will be giving birth in the next few days whether we like it or not..." Isolde explained.

"But she is not due for another six weeks! This child...may die...and Valka is too weak to have another child..."

Isolde looked down, her hands going to her baby bump as Dad whispered to Mom.

"What do you see?" Someone said from behind me and I jumped, holding Excalibur to up to see Merlin.

"How did..." I started but he raised his hand.

"You do realize we have been waiting for this moment, don't you?" Merlin explained as I sighed.

"Why am I here? What is this?"

"You're going to learn your connection to the sword..." Merlin said as I looked at the blade.

"I know about Uther and you and Kilgarrah..." Hiccup explained, alarming Merlin slightly. "I saw it when I went into Avalon to save Astrid. I don't need another retelling of that story..."

"This is not that story..." Merlin said, before tilting his head. "Well...it's a continuation of that story but you do need to see this."

Dad suddenly left the house and called for boats to dock. "Is he just leaving my mother?" I asked Merlin who nodded.

"Your dad is going somewhere important..." Merlin replied. I looked at the house, then the boats, then the house again and then the boats.

"Now what?" I grumbled as Merlin snapped his fingers.

In a flash of light, we left Berk and were now at the Lake of Avalon.

Someone came running from the right before the lake and I ducked behind a boulder. "You do realize they cannot see you?" Merlin said, remaining standing up and I slowly stood back up and cleared my throat.

"Reflex..." I explained as I saw that the person was Dad. "What the..." I looked at Merlin as my Dad called forward the Guardians. "My dad knew about them?"
