• quiet and studious, Prince Wonwoo spends most of his time alone
• many people in the castle haven't ever even seen his face
• he was seriously ill as a child and so he was confined to his bedroom
• the physicians told his parents that he would likely never fully recover from his childhood sickness, and may not even be strong enough to take the crown
• but by the time he was sixteen years old they thought he had recovered and would be well enough to begin his duties as a Prince
• he still stayed almost anonymous, though, preferring to stay in the library and in a private garden his parents constructed so he could still go outside while he was sick
• and besides, he was confined to a wheelchair so his mobility was severely limited
• then when he was twenty, he became seriously sick again
• all the beginnings of learning to walk, building up his strength, turned out to be for nothing
• it's now been a year and a half since his most recent illness and he's only moved from his bedroom to visit the library
• and that only three times
• he refuses to so much as look at his wheelchair most days, preferring to remain in his bed and read the books that the palace staff bring him
• one day he hears the staff whispering about the mysterious girl who was supposed to arrive the next day
• he pretends to be asleep so they'll talk more about her, because there are so few things he can do and he's bored enough to even listen to gossip
• "the poor girl," one of the nurses says sympathetically. "I heard her family died of fever — all except her twin brother."
• "thank goodness he was at court at the time," another murmurs. "If she'd been left with no family..."
• Wonwoo grows bored quickly and actually goes to sleep
• you arrive the next day escorted by two knights a little older than you
• and your brother is waiting for you, dressed entirely in black
• he gives the two knights a solemn nod and takes your arm
• "are you all right?" he asks, voice choked with tears. "You're not sick?"
• you lower your head, glad for the black veil that hides your face
• "it was the same sickness we had when we were babies," you reply
• your brother sighs, squeezing your hand comfortingly
• "at least we have a place here," he murmurs. "And at least you weren't sick. I don't know what I would have done..."
• another knight is waiting inside and puts his arm around your brother's shoulder comfortingly
• "y/n, this is my best friend, Hansol," your brother introduces you as he leads you through the castle. "He's been... a great comfort."
• he drops you off at your room, lingering in the doorway
• "do you need anything?" he asks
• you shake your head as you take off your veil
• "no, I'm fine. You go do whatever you need to."
• over the next week you explore the castle as much as you can
• you find the library on the fourth day and spend a lot of your time there
