Baragar was a giant and a bully. For years giants had lived at peace with smaller, pure bred humans. Hearing of the kingdom of the giants to the south Baragar also thought he would start a kingdom. Twenty farms now paid tribute to him and he was making the farmers lives not worth living. His 'court' was at the sloping rock. The villagers had had to build him a large house, larger than normal, to contain his giant frame. He had also taken seven virgins to be his concubines and this was a great insult to the farmers because they had not given their permission.
Mendro had heard the rumour of Baragar and told Kendra and the others so they planned to make him a visit. However Nimen told them he needed Shebu bringing first and Kendra decided to bring the horse in the dark and see Baragar the next day.
A man named Joreld had beaten them to it. He was a large farmer and his sister was one of the seven virgins who had been taken. Being proficient with a sharpened ox goad he had killed a man before, one who had waylaid him on the road to Shiloh. Knowing the giant to be fast he relied upon a subtle ruse to give him the upper hand.
