One day, after working with the animals, he was told that he would be guarding his boss’s wife and daughter as they travelled to see relatives in another city.
In the caravan there were three carts pulled by oxen. There were ten guards led by the caravan master Dewess. On this trip he was taking two cart loads of spices to Kalakar, a city to the east, and one with the merchant’s wife Sulee and his daughter Salinas.
Kendra placed himself near the cart carrying Salinas and her mother. Dewess was pleased because Kendra was turning out to be a good fighter, strong and agile, competent in sword and bow, trained by his own hand. He would say that Kendra was better than him if he told the truth but there were a few tricks he left untaught so that he could still beat the Nephilim and pretend that he was better.
This way before they had had trouble with bandits so he had four more guards than usual to keep the boss’s wife safe. He sent Kendra ahead to scout for trouble.
There was a hollow in the hills covered by trees. Kendra looked down into it and saw five men readied for an ambush. As he glanced up he saw Danen looking at him, “What’s the matter?” he asked.
“I can see into your heart, you must not attack them first.”
“They have set an ambush for us, why should I not attack first?”
“It is not honourable to do such a thing. You need to keep a code of honour, our code of honour. Only attack once you have been attacked. If you do not keep this rule then you may find that you will be unable to return to the Rock, the membrane may keep you out, perceiving you as evil.”
“I shall warn the others.” Kendra turned and quietly made his way back to the caravan thinking upon the advice the angel had given him.
Telling Dewess of the trap Kendra suggested they park two of the carts behind a hill and proceed with seven of the guards hidden in a cart so that they could spring their own trap on the brigands. Kendra was to be left behind with the two carts, Salinas and her mother. Within 15 minutes they heard the sound of battle. Feeling a presence near his arm Kendra concentrated to see Puleyn.
“What do you want Puleyn?” he asked.
“There are three more brigands hoping to catch you unawares, they are sneaking up on you.”
“Can I use my father’s gift to sneak up on them?” inquired the Nephilim.
“Of course you can, but you need to let them attack first.”
Kendra wrinkled his lips, he had never before fought more than one man, he would have to be quick to be able to take all three on. He looked towards the bluff where he supposed the men were sneaking up on him then he concentrated.
