I stepped through the door way to see Isaac and Kim, Isaac's childhood friend, chilling on the sofa together both with grins on their faces.
"Hey, Isaac, Kim," I waved as I walked towards our room to put my things down.
"Hey, Alex!" Called Kim as I walked past.
Kim and I were never really close, I mean, we were friendly enough to each other but we were never best friends. She and Isaac, on the other hand, were as close as they could get.
Kim had always had a reputation and it was the kind of one where half say good stuff about her and half said not so good. But, she made Isaac happy so I tried not to listen the negative... but I also didn't pay attention to the positive.
It's not that I didn't trust her, it's just that we never clicked like Alyssa and I did, but I had no problem with her being around.
"Come down for a day trip?" I asked, as I returned from our room and settled on Isaac's lap. Kim had chosen to go to uni in Newcastle while we all got accepted to a uni in Brighton. I knew Isaac missed her but they talked on the phone at least once a week.
"Well that's just it," she paused, her white teeth glinting in the dull light of the living room. "I'm transferring to Brighton,"
A part of me fell while the rest stayed neutral. Kim is moving to Brighton. Excellent. That meant that she and Isaac would be out every night and I would be home alone.
"That's awesome!" Cried Isaac, fist pumping the air while Kim clapped under her chin.
"Yeah, that's great!" I returned with as much enthusiasm I could muster. "Where are you going to stay? Have you sorted out an apartment or residency?" I asked, hopping off Isaac's lap and making my way to the kitchen, my eyes on the floor the whole time.
"Yeah, I've settled some campus residency until I can find my own place," she replied before returning to her conversation with Isaac.
I tuned out to the noise of them listing off things they were going to do while I made myself a cup of tea and rested with my back against the pantry so they couldn't see me.
"God I hope I get that nannying job," I prayed to myself and the gods of employment.
Kim didn't leave until one thirty in the morning that night, I gave up and went to bed without Isaac cause I had classes in the morning. Even so, I still stayed up on my phone listening to Kingston and playing solitare... but I was in bed, that's the point.
He stumbled around the room not caring if he was making any noise as he threw his clothes on the chair in the corner and opened and closed the bathroom cupboard doors loudly. I had my eyes closed and the blankets tucked under my chin so to anyone observing it would've looked like I was asleep, but that's another issue - Isaac tends not to realise the little things like not making noise when someone is asleep.
I sighed loudly and rolled over to glare at him through the door of the bathroom. He leaned back and saw me, his toothbrush hanging from his mouth with bits of foam around his lips and slid the sliding door with a thud.
'Think of Kingston, think of Kingston,' I ranted over and over in my head.
I often imagined what it would be like to live with Kingston in an apartment in London or LA. James Kingston was born in Brighton and lived here until he was 5, then moved to America with his parents and stayed there until he was 16 before moving back to London with his mum after his parents divorced.
