"Steve..." you whispered, tears in your eyes, "you- you said you felt the same way, why can't we just make this work?"
"I'm sorry Y/N, I- I just can't," Steve spoke gently, his shoulders slumped, he was visibly upset. You reached your hand out and held his, looking him in the eyes.
"why Steve?" You asked, tears still pricking your eyes.
"it's not that I don't have feelings for you, Y/N because I do, it's just..." he trailed off.
"Just what Steve? We can work through it together," you assured him.
"Peggy was the first woman I ever loved, she lived her whole life without me and then I get her back, but then she's gone and I'm left here. I can't move on from her I just feel... unfaithful," he whispered, gently kissing your forehead. "I'm sorry, Y/N," he left you there, alone.
