His voice brought back memories of dark rooms and broken bones. Your head snapped up to see The Winter Soldier walking in with Steve by his side. Your breath hitched in your throat as he strolled in casually, laughing at something Steve had said. No. Not him. Your breaths became choppy and uneven as you tried to call yourself down, remembering the breathing exercises Natasha had shown you not long after you came under the aid of the avengers.

Steve did a double take as he saw you sitting on the couch, hyperventilating. "Y/N." He gasped, running towards you. Bucky followed close behind, visibly worried for the girl he didn't know.
"Nnn-n-no. No." You said between breaths, trying to hit Steve away as he crouched in front of you. His eyes were frantically looking all over your body, looking for some sort of injury of reason for you to be acting like this. When he didn't see one, he just held his hands on your knees, telling you to copy his breathing. You tried and tried, your breaths eventually becoming somewhat normal. Tears had streaked down your face as he pulled you into a tight hug, rubbing a hand up and down your back.

When he pulled away, he spoke in an extremely gentle voice. "What's wrong?" He asked, grabbing your hand comfortingly, "are you afraid?" When you nodded in reply, he looked at Bucky, shrugging his shoulders. "What are you afraid of?"
You looked up, making direct eye contact with Bucky.
"You." You whispered, looking back down your hands. That one word hung in the air for a while, sending a deafening silence throughout the room.
"I-I don't understand." Bucky broke the silence, his voice barely above a whisper. He sat down on the carpet, running a hand through his hair.
"He-he tortured me, Steve. In hydra. He tORTURED ME." Your voice came to a breathy scream at the end, making both men flinch. Bucky's mouth was agape, no words leaving his mouth.

He got up suddenly, leaving the room. Tears streamed down your face once again as you clung onto Steve desperately. "He tortured me. Hurt me in more places than I can count. He broke me, Steve."
