TEN O'CLOCK ON A SATURDAY, and Dustin was ringing up his science teacher. Everyone sat in the kitchen as the boy held the phone in one hand and a pencil in the other, prepared to get all the information he could from the teacher who knew so much about everything, it seemed.
"Mr. Clarke? It's Dustin. Do you know anything about sensory deprivation tanks? Specifically how to build one?"
The was a brief pause as Mr. Clarke responded to Dustin's very odd question.
The curly-headed boy shook his head. "You always say we should never stop being curious. To always open any curiosity door we find. Why are you keeping this curiosity door locked?"
Dustin was silent for another moment or so as he listened to his teacher. A smile slowly pulled at his lips as he began to jot down notes. "Uh-huh. How much? Uh-huh. Yep, alright. Yeah, definitely. I'll see you on Monday, Mr. Clarke. Yep. Bye."
He hung up the phone and immediately turned to Joyce. "Do you still have that kiddie pool we bobbed for apples in?"
"I think so. Yeah."
"Good. Then we just need salt. Lots of it."
"How much is 'lots?'" Jim asked.
Dustin looked down at his notepad. "Fifteen-hundred pounds."
"Where are we gonna get that much salt?" Kate wondered aloud, pinching her eyebrows together in confusion. From next to her, her dad got up from the table and grabbed his hat. Everyone followed him out the door.
"Where are we going?" Nancy asked.
"Middle school."
