Emily's PoV

I breathe in deeply as I lean against Jasper as he wraps his arm lovingly around my waist as I fiddle with my graduation cap.

"When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our answers were things like astronaut, president or in my case, a princess."

I entwine my hand with Jasper's giggling at Jessica's comment.

"When we were ten they asked again. We answered, rock star, cowboy. Or in my case, a gold medalist."

I smile widely.

"But now that we've grown up, they want a serious answer. Well, how about this? Who the hell knows?"

I cheer loudly, clapping as Jasper laughs light-heartedly.

"This isn't the time to make hard-and-fast decisions. This is the time to make mistakes."

I feel myself glance up at Jessica, my eyes full of curiousity and interest.

"Take the wrong train and get stuck somewhere. Fall in love, a lot."

Jasper grins at me as I smack his shoulder playfully.

"Major in philosophy, because there is no way to make a career out of that."

I roll my eyes, a smile playing on my lips.

"Change your mind, and change it again, because nothing is permanent."

My smile falters abruptly as I thought carefully about what she was saying.
Everything she was suggesting is true, except in my case. Becoming a vampire is permanent and there is no way to reverse it.

"So make as many mistakes as you can. That way, someday, when they ask what we want to be we won't have to guess we'll know."

I stand up, putting on a fake smile, cheering Jessica as she looks ahead brightly.

I sit in Alice's room, slowly applying mascara on my lashes as Rose finishes pinning my hair into place.

I smile at them, walking over to Alice's bathroom where I slip on a simple but pretty party dress. I zip myself up and brush down the pleated skirt, as I re-enter Alice's room.
