it's officially february, which means VALENTINE's DAy PERCABETH!!

Loving you is my favorite thing to do. You make it so easy to love you, you're so perfect in every wa-

Percy stared at the note in front of him. Love...it's a strong word.

Now, don't get him wrong—Percy's absolutely sure he's in love with Annabeth. When he first started to like her, he attempted to brush it off, seeing as they were best friends. But over time, the crush only seemed to increase.

Being best friends with Annabeth while simultaneously being in love with her definitely sucks, but it also has its up sides. He knows that she'd be scared off if a guy told her he loves her right away. He also knows that she's a huge romantic, but rarely shows that side of her.

Happy Valentine's Day, Annabeth. He wrote instead. I've liked you for a very long time, and so hope this isn't weird...

;;;

Percy's leg bounced up and down anxiously as he glanced at Annabeth for what felt like the five-hundredth time that day. She tucked a strand of her curly hair behind her ear carefully and frowned at the problem in front of her.

"Percy," she said suddenly, "what's seven times six?"

He didn't even try to respond.

"Forty-two," she answered herself. "Sorry, I just needed to-"

"Say it out loud," Percy finished. He couldn't help the dorky smile on his face. "I know, Beth."

Annabeth smiled at him, and Percy felt a little ease. He'd been trying to hold back the question biting at his tongue; did she read the letter yet? He wanted to believe that maybe she hadn't seen it in her locker, or maybe she liked Percy and didn't want to tell him about her secret admirer.

The latter was probably wishful thinking, but Percy didn't care. He told himself anything to avoid the alternative; Annabeth had read the letter, and she wasn't interested.

His stomach turned at the thought.

"Hey," she said. Percy shifted his gaze to meet her gray eyes. "Let's have a movie night."

He didn't hesitate to agree, eagerly insisting that popcorn was absolutely necessary. Annabeth smiled and ruffled his hair a bit, and everything was perfect.

;;;

Halfway throughout the movie, Annabeth scooted a little closer to Percy. She rested her head on his chest, and he smiled down at her.

"Something happened today," she said casually.

Percy's heart beat seemed to pick up immediately.

"Y-yeah?" he stuttered.

Annabeth hummed to confirm her statement, turning her head to stare at Percy's eyes. "There was a note in my locker...it said something like, I've liked you for a long time. You mean so much to me, you're so beautiful, and I want to care for you how you should be cared for."

It stung in Percy's heart to hear his words of love from Annabeth's mouth. She was smiling at him.

"Seems like a..." he gulped, "secret admirer."

Annabeth burst out laughing then, sitting up from Percy's lap and covering her mouth in that cute way she did whenever she laughed. Her eyes were sparkling.

"Percy, we've been best friends forever. I know how you write."

Two things happened; Percy's heart stopped working, and Annabeth continued to laugh.

It wasn't a snobby laugh or a nervous one, it was full of joy. Percy stared at her, horrified, as he awaited his inevitable rejection.

"Annabeth, I-"

Percy took a deep breath, desperately trying to figure out a way to redeem himself.

"Percy..." she said through a laugh. "Why didn't you just tell me?"

She was still grinning, and she hadn't run away yet, so Percy assumed she wasn't mad. He gathered up his courage and countered, "why didn't you tell me that you knew?"

Annabeth shrugged. She shifted so she was closer to Percy. "You're cute when you're nervous," she admitted. "I wanted to make you suffer, just a bit."

He sighed and shook his head in dismay. His cheeks were definitely red, but for some reason, he couldn't stop smiling.

"You, Miss Chase, will be the death of me," he decided. He rubbed circles on her hips with his thumb, and she leaned in just a bit closer to his face. Percy felt drunk.

"I was going to wait this whole thing out," Annabeth said, "but it is Valentine's Day. And...it'd be a shame if I didn't get to kiss you by the time the holiday ended."

Percy blinked. He smiled sweetly.

"You're right," he agreed. "So, are we-"

Annabeth was always one to do impulsive things. Once, in sixth grade, she jumped out the window of the classroom just because the teacher was being racist to her friend. It was only the second story, so she wasn't hurt, but the principal was so confused and angry that he ended up firing the teacher.

Now, the impulsiveness kicked in again. She leaned in and kissed Percy passionately, grabbing his face gently.

And Percy—well, he's in bliss.

And it was pretty much the best Valentine's Day kiss ever.
