That's it.

Annabeth slammed her door as her step-mother continued to yell at her, going on about how the monster attacks were endangering her little boys. Annabeth's father always agreed, saying that she was endangering his family.

His- Annabeth stuffed one last t-shirt into her suitcase—perfect—she closed her luggage—family—she zipped up the suitcase.

"Athena." Annabeth looked up at her ceiling, a sarcastic, hopeless expression on her face. "Protect me."

As she prepared to leave, she heard the familiar steps of little kids; twins, to be exact. Annabeth sighed and shoved her suitcase under her bed, annoyed that her step-brothers ruined her perfectly planned escape once again.

Bobby and Matthew threw open her bedroom door, laughing maniacally.

"Nannabeth!" Bobby cried, smiling wildly. Annabeth rolled her eyes. It was bad enough that she had to live with two year-old twins, but the least they could do was get her name right.

"Tell us a story," Matthew whined. He jutted out his bottom lip, and if Annabeth hadn't been so infuriated by her parents, she might have caved right then.

"I'm leaving," she said.

Bobby frowned. "Why?"

"Your mom and dad don't want me here."

There was a second of silence before Bobby asked, "why?"

"I'm not perfect like they are."

She should have anticipated his statement before he asked, once again, "why?"

Annabeth regretted telling her baby brothers to never stop asking why. They could barely form full sentences, but they sure knew that word.

Still, a voice in her head encouraged her to give them some explanation. It would be hypocritical of her to leave them behind, just as her father mentally did years ago, with no reasoning.

They won't remember what you tell them, anyway...

Annabeth sighed. She glanced at her step-brothers, the only people in her family that didn't detest her.

"Well, I guess it all began when dad met my mom."

;;;

"Now, monsters try to kill me," Annabeth admitted, wrapping up her story. Her heart stung a little at the fact that she was only seven years-old and already in constant, life-threatening danger, but she didn't really have time to feel sorry for herself.

Bobby's eyes were wide. Matthew was frowning.

"How are you here, Nannabeth?" he asked innocently. Annabeth assumed he was asking how she had survived this long, and honestly, she didn't have a good answer. Was it dumb luck? Help from Athena?

"I just...fight the monsters. I kill them, to protect you. And that's why my dad and your mom don't want me here. You guys are in danger."

Bobby pouted. "But we're family, Nannabeth." He snuggled up next to her and climbed into her lap, finding comfort in her arms. "I love you."

Annabeth's heart dropped to her stomach. Gods, how could she leave these two? They hadn't done anything to her. They were so young, so innocent...

Visions of monsters flashed in Annabeth's brain, causing her to flinch. Staying with the boys would be selfish. She might have had a few lucky kills, but if she failed to kill a monster and it hurt one of the twins...

"I love you," she replied, which sounded weird in her mouth. Annabeth hadn't said those words in so long. Matthew laid his little head on her shoulder.

Annabeth was glad that the twins were smarter than the average two year-old, so they could grasp what she was saying. She was also glad that they were young enough to forget this, and hopefully stuff it away in the back of their heads when she left and never returned.

That night, Annabeth snuck out of her room quietly, her suitcase in hand. She tip-toed to the twins' room and kissed them each on the forehead.

"I love you," she whispered, fully aware that they weren't listening. She just wanted to say it one last time.

She crept down the stairs, opened the front door, and began her journey as a demigod.
