4) I don't like him

"Who is the new kid?" Luke asks me Tuesday morning as I am at my locker. I turn around to see who he is looking at though I have a good guess. My prediction is right when I see Zack walking down the hall.

It also doesn't look like Luke is the only one to notice him. I hear giggles from girls all around and it sounds almost like, well almost like it sounded when Luke walked in on the first day of school.

I blush and turn back to my locker hoping Luke doesn't see. "Last time I checked we weren't friends" I say calmly to him. He leans down next to my ear so only I can hear him and says "well last time I checked you don't blush".

I blushed even harder at that "I'm not blushing" I weakly try to deny it but he just laughs. "Sure, you're just red because you ran a mile before you came to school".

"His name is Zack" I say trying to change the subject. "He moved hear and he is Belle's cousin so that is how I know him" I finish.

Luke studies him for a few seconds before stating "I don't like him". I snort at that "You don't like him only because he may give you a run for your money on the most popular boy in our grade". It is now Luke's turn to snort. "Please, that guy is no competition".

"Sure" I reply while rolling my eyes. Zack is getting closer now and suddenly he changes his direction slightly and makes his way over to me.

No way. I'm not ready for this. I don't think I ever will be. Yesterday was so much fun but I didn't think his friendship would last. He would meet the other girls like Nicole and quickly forget about me. I was nothing compared to Nicole Brooks.

"We meet again" he says humorously and I turn to face him and give him a real smile "Why hello Zack" I state and am surprised by how natural my voice sounds.

He gives me another smile and suddenly notices Luke standing next to me "Hey man, I'm Zack" he reaches out his hand to shake Luke's but he quickly stops his gesture with a flat "hey".

Zack awkwardly shoves his hand back into his pocket and clears his throat "so I wanted to ask you something Claire" he says and for some reason when he says my name I get butterflies inside "yeah?" I ask.

"Well since you know this town a lot better than I do I thought maybe you could help me pick a place for lunch and we can eat there today?" he asks. At that my face breaks into a huge smile "yeah, sure, that sounds fun".

he smiles bigger at my accept and shoulders his backpack "well that's great then. I'll meet you in the front at the beginning of lunch period?. I nod my head. He smiles and says "okay see you then".

Before he walks away he looks at Luke and awkwardly says "umm nice meeting you". Luke doesn't return the smile. He simply just stares at Zack. Zack gives him a half smile and walks away.

"I don't like him" Luke repeats. I say in a sarcastic tone "really? I wouldn't have guessed. You seemed to like him when he talked to you" and walk away to my first period.

The time goes slowly by but finally it is 4th period lunch and I quickly grab my wallet and go to the front of the school. Zack is already there and turns around to face me as I walk towards him.

"You ready?" he asks and I nod as we head for his car. "So where is a good place to eat?" he asks. "Well I like this small place called sonic burger. They have the best burgers and it is close to the school".He nods and we get into the car.

It doesn't take long to reach the shop and during the drive I tell him about our school. We continue the talk as we sit down and put in our drink orders.
