We passed through towns and cities, but the rain obscured most of the view. At one point, I saw people running after the bus, similar to the other woman.

'They're infected by the Flare, aren't they?' I finally asked.

I didn't recover all my memories, and I didn't remember those horrible people, or rather, things.

'Yes, they are. How did you know that?' A woman asked.

'Long story,' I said. 'I got some of my memories back. But not all. Where are we going? And who are you?' I asked.

'We're going to a safe haven, but first we need to cross the Scorch: a desert land near the equator. We dedicate our lives to fight WICKED,' she explained.

I looked over at Thomas to see his reaction. He looked devastated. I bet he felt betrayed by WICKED, after they'd killed Chuck.

'And we hope you'll join us,' she said.

I leaned on Newt's shoulder, but I couldn't fall asleep. He stroked my hair. I thanked for being with him. I felt a swirl of conflicting emotions.

A couple of hours later, the bus stopped. Outside was a building filled of windows. We left the bus, and shuffled through the front door and up a couple of stairs. I saw Louise being taken care of.

We entered a huge dorm with lots of bunk beds lined along the walls. Everything was full of colour: yellow paint, red blankets and green curtains.

'This is for the girls,' a man said.

I hated the idea of splitting up with Newt, but there was no other option. I kissed him hard.

'See you soon,' he whispered. I kissed him again. I had a bad feeling about it.

I shared a bunk with Rita. I couldn't feel safe without Newt. They gave us clothes, bathroom things and served us dinner. Pizza. I ate it, and it was delicious. I took a bath, and dressed some clean clothes.

Although everything was near perfect, I couldn't shake off that something was wrong. I went to the bottom bed.

'Do you think we're safe?' Sofia asked.

'Not really,' I replied. 'This is strange.'

'You miss Newt.' Rita said, teasing me.

'And you miss Cam,' I said, smirking.

I tried to fall asleep.

'I think we're almost safe,' Rita said quietly.

And for now, almost was good enough.
