Take me through the night,
Fall into the dark side;
We don't need the light,
We'll live on the dark side:
I see it, let's feel it,
While we're still young and fearless.

During middle school, I got a call from the principal's office, wanting me to go home due to a family emergency.

Even though I didn't know the reason, I was scared.

Never in my lifetime had I ever thought about the future very deeply, maybe because I had never needed to. My life was good until now.

When I finally reached home, Anna took me to the hospital only for me to find out the worst news of my life.

My Dad had passed away.

Life, it's unpredictable. You never know what is coming next. All you can do is be ready for the change. That's what people say.

But how can someone be ready for the death of their loved ones?
How are you supposed to register the fact that the one with whom you were going to watch a movie tonight is not waking up anymore?

Mom was numb, and I started crying. My heart clenched in denial as I couldn't listen to the truth. I didn't want to believe that my Dad was gone. I didn't want to dawn upon the realization that I was never going to see him smile or hear him laugh. That I was never going to be able to speak to him or tell him how much I love him.

I walked up to my mother and asked her, "Mom, what happened?"

At first, she didn't reply, so I shook her. As soon as she saw me, she started sobbing as if she just came back to her senses.

"Oh, baby!!" She cried, hugging me tightly.

We both were crying hard.

"Mom, tell me what happened to Dad," I asked between my cries.

"I- I got a call from the hospital when he got a sudden cardiac arrest." Mom said.

My dad was dead

I sobbed uncontrollably for hours.

The fact that my dad had died was unbelievable. Everything inside me collapsed, and I couldn't stop my tears as I cried my heart out. The whole thing seemed unrealistic, and every passing moment felt worse and worse.

He had been healthy and doing fantastic all these years, so everybody who knew him was shocked. I knew these people were genuinely sad. Everyone was going to miss him so much.

The funeral was set four days later.

I had been to funerals before, but this was the first one in which I didn't want to go.

I wore the little black dress I'd bought for my fourteenth birthday party, along with my dad. I wanted a different dress, but dad liked this one. And I can't be more thankful to have brought the one he wanted.

I reached the church with Anna, Lucas, and Liza. Lucas kept holding my hand tightly as if trying to tell me to stay strong. Mom was already there, talking to the people as both my maternal and paternal grandparents stood by her side. I saw my mom's father standing afar from them. I let go of Lucas's hand, nodding him in assurance as I rushed towards my grandfather.
