Jacob smiles, writing his signature at the bottom of the paper.
Sitting back down in the lobby, he smiles contentedly, grabbing his husband's hand and kissing his knuckles softly. Troye smiles at the elder, "You ready to officially be a daddy?"
"I was born ready."
"You're gonna be a good dad," Troye chuckles.
"Jacob Bixenman?"
Jacob stands up at the sound of his name and walks back to a room with Troye by his side.
"Hello! Please, have a seat."
Sitting down, the older woman introduces herself as Mrs. Robinson.
"I have looked through your records and I've noticed some...slight topics I wanted to talk to you about."
Shit.
Jacob feels Troye's grip tighten lightly on his hand.
Jacob nods.
"I've noticed you have a history with drug abuse? Is that correct?"
He nods again, hesitantly, "Yeah. I-I used to be addicted when I was younger."
"And have you gone to rehab?"
"Yes."
"And how long have you been without drugs?"
"Almost eight years."
Writing that information down on a sheet of paper, the couple are told that they'd be informed if the adoption could go through by the next day.
Leaving the building, the two sit in the car and Jacob lies his head back against the car seat as he shuts his eyes.
"Jacob," Troye says quietly.
"Don't try to make me feel better. Let's just hope that my stupid mistakes don't get in the way of this."
He hears Troye sigh before starting the car, "I love you, Jacob. I'm here if you ever need to talk about anything."
Jacob stays silent, opening his eyes to stare out the window.
🎵
Lying his head on my husband's lap, Jacob faces the younger's stomach and kisses his abdomen every once in a while.
Troye rubs his back with a kiss to his head.
He wraps his arms around the smaller boy's waist, "Troye?"
"What, baby?"
"I'm sorry."
lFor what?"
The elder lets out a shaky breath, forcing the water to stay in his eyes.
"Jakie, what are you sorry for?" Letting out a small sob, "If I wasn't so dumb, I would be able to adopt Bailey without any hesitation."
Troye hugs his head gently, leans down and lies his head on top of his, "It's gonna be okay, Jacob. I promise everything will be okay."
"If I wouldn't have done those fucking drugs, it wouldn't be on my permanent record and they wouldn't have had a problem with me!" he cries. "If I would have chose to live with my dad instead of my mom, I wouldn't have ever been around drugs and maybe-"
"You wouldn't have met me."
"What?" He asks quietly.
"If you would've moved to Florida with your dad and siblings, I might not have ever met you."
More tears roll down Jacob's cheeks as he hides his face in his husbands lap once again.
Troye hugs him closer. "Shh, Jacob. It's okay."
He feels Troye begin playing with his hair, calming him down slightly, "That's not who you are anymore. You've gone almost eight years without drugs. They're going to see that. They're going to see that you've been clean and you've been to rehab for it."
"I'm just scared," Jacob whispers.
"I know you are, baby. But, we're gonna get through-"
"Please don't let me go down that path, Troye. I've been craving them for a long time and I don't want to do that to you or Bailey. I don't want to fuck up my life again. I want to be a good dad and husband."
"And you will be. I'll help you whenever you need it, I promise, Jacob."
The elder lets out a breath, "I love you, baby boy."
"I love you too, tiger bug."
🎵
"Hello?" Jacob gasps answering his phone. "Hi, this is Mrs. Robinson from the Cleveland Adoption Center. Is this Jacob Bixenman?"
"Yes," he answers nervously, sitting up on the couch, having been asleep when the call came through.
"I just wanted to let you know that we've looked over your records and have made a decision for your adoption choice for Bailey Sivan."
Jacob snaps his head at Troye as he sits up next to him.
He gives a confused look as the elder listens silently.
"We've decided, because it is said here that you've been without any trouble with drug use for over five years, is that right?"
"Yes, I was in rehab when I was 19 until I turned 21," he replies shamefully, looking away from his husband.
Troye grabs his hand and kisses it lightly. "That's great to hear. Um, well, we have decided to allow you to adopt Bailey. We just need you to come in to sign a few more documents for it to be official. When are you free to come in?"
"Whenever!" Jacob says happily. "Just name a day and time and I'll be there!"
After getting a date set, he hangs up, his mouth open in surprise and happiness.
"Jacob?"
He looks at the smaller man beside him with a smile, "They're letting me adopt her!"
