-MACELLA BROWN
I introduce them to my father and then we all sit down and eat silently. I honestly have no idea what the hell to say to him right now
“So what do you do?”
Yaya asks breaking the ice
“I’ve been in between jobs and now I just want something stable”
He responds and then stuffs his mouth with creamed spinach
“I can't do this, what do you want?”
Melo asks him placing his utensils on the sides of his plate, Yaya places a hand over his but his attention is on my father
“You tried to sell her and clearly that didn’t work out and now years later you suddenly want to see her? What game are you playing at?”
Melo asks him sternly
“I don’t think I owe you any answers”
Melo chuckles
“Oh I think you do considering we have been taking care of her. We are her parents, you owe us the answers we require”
Melo says, my father takes a deep breath and then exhales
“I’d like to speak to Macella alone”
He says
“No, say whatever you want to say in front of them”
I fire at him, he exhales
“Macella I want my daughter back, I want a relationship with you. I want to right my wrongs”
I chuckle
“Did you hit your head? Like are you mentally ok?”
I ask him, he stretches his hand to mine and retract mine
“You sold me off and now you suddenly want to make things right with me? It doesn’t work like that! The only reason I even agreed to see you is because of her and now that you sit before I realise that this was a mistake. I don’t think I ever want to have a relationship with you. May I please be excused?”
I ask pushing my chair back and Yaya nods, I stand up
“Macella please. I messed up and I’m sorry”

-YANDISWA BESS
Watching Mercy meeting her father takes me back to the first time I met my father and how things were. I of all people understand where she is coming from considering my father told me straight up that he didn’t want a relationship with me, I of all people know what being rejected by your father feels like and I understand where Macella is coming from. Maybe she was not ready to see this man again, maybe she’s not mentally ready to forgive him especially since he doesn’t even look like he regrets what he did all those years ago. He’s been fidgeting with his hands and his eyes have been roaming around anything but his daughter, if I didn’t know better I’d assume he’s an addict or something
“Let her cool down”
I say and then Melo gets up and excuses himself
“I just want my daughter”
He pleads
“Why? Why would we entrust Macella’s life with you? Look at you, you craving”
I say and he shakes his head
“No I’m clean, I’ve been clean for 6 months now”
He says defensively
“And I applaud you for trying to pick your life up but that starts with being honest from the get go. You sold her off to pay a debt and now you suddenly want her back while you are trying to battle an addiction. Mercy deserves better than you”
I tell him
“I love my daughter, I made a mistake all those years ago”
He says and tears roll down his cheeks
“I just want to make things right, my wife haunts me every night for what I did to our daughter. I shouldn’t have sold her off and I want to make things right with her, please talk to her”
He begs, the sight of a broken man is always saddening because you find yourself wanting to help him out and make things right even though you never broke him but as a woman you find yourself wanting to fix him.
“Look, I feel sorry for you. I really do but I cannot get Mercy to forgive you or even talk to you. Convincing her to have this lunch with you was work on it's own, what you did to her was painful for her, you made her feel unloved and worthless. When I met her she had this shell around her heart, she didn’t believe that she could be loved and cared for. You broke her at a very young age and I don’t think you understand the depth of what you did to her. Give her time, allow her to heal and when she is ready she will give you a chance to redeem yourself ok?”
He nods wiping his tears, Melo and Mercy walk in
“Please leave”
Mercy says
“Honey”
She shakes her head
“No mom, he needs to leave now. I never want to see him again, this man is still using! Who knows what he’ll do to me if I give him a chance again huh? Leave”
Mercy says
“Macella I swear I’m not using anymore, I’ve been clean for 6 months now”
Mercy chuckles
“I know you, you are my father. I know how you are when you are using, I know how you get when you lie. Leave, I never want to see you again. Go on and kill yourself while you at it, I just never want to ever see you again!”
Mercy screams at him, I look at Melo expecting him to do something but he doesn’t say anything
“Macella you don’t mean that, I’m your father. You all I have of your mother”
He pleads
“LEAVE!”

-YANGA BESS
We drive back home after our outing, my relationship with my siblings hasn’t been the same ever since what I did to Mercy. Aya uses every opportunity she gets to tell me that I’m trash and because I realise what I did wrong I don’t even try to defend myself. I am trying to fix my mess and if moving back here means things might work out with Mercy then I’m willing to take that chance. I just hope she will be able to forgive me.
“You know if they find out we will all be in shit right?”
Miso says and I nod
“As long as nothing breaks then we should be able to get away with it”
I say and Aya shrugs
“Hopefully you’ll be able to watch everything while worried about Mercy and her doctor friend”
She says trying to spite me. She told me about Mercy and a “hot doctor from the club” while we were having lunch and how cosy they were in the club and honestly I’m a little intimidated but then whoever he is, he doesn’t compare to me. I’m a Bess and I Mercy loves me so I’m at an advantage
“he’s a rebound and probably a play thing to make me jealous”
They both laugh
“Whatever tickles your balls brother”
